Costco Recalls 3,314 Pounds of Ahi Tuna Poke Over Listeria Risk

Costco has announced a recall of approximately 3,314 pounds of its Kirkland Signature brand Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The poke was produced by the Western United Fish Company, also known as Annasea Foods Group, based in Kent, Washington. The product affected was packed on September 18, 2025, and has a sell-by date of September 22, 2025.

The recall arises from concerns related to green onions included in the poke, rather than the raw fish itself. According to the company’s statement on the FDA website, the recall was initiated after the green onion supplier reported a positive test for Listeria. “We are continuing to work with our green onion supplier to determine the root cause,” the company noted.

Listeria can pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeria infection can range from high fever and severe headaches to nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The FDA has urged consumers who purchased this product to dispose of it immediately and seek a full refund from their local Costco.

The affected poke was packaged in plastic clamshell containers branded with the Kirkland Signature label, and consumers are advised to check their purchases closely. The states impacted by this recall include various locations where Costco operates, although specific states have not been disclosed.

This recall comes amid heightened concerns regarding food safety in the United States. In June, a significant listeria outbreak linked to chicken fettuccine alfredo sold at major retailers like Kroger and Walmart led to illness in 17 individuals, with three fatalities reported. Listeria’s risks are particularly pronounced for pregnant individuals, as severe complications can arise.

Concerns have also been raised about recent cuts to food safety monitoring programs. Reports indicate that the CDC has reduced its Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network, known as FoodNet, which tracks foodborne illnesses. With a population exceeding 330 million, the potential for unnoticed outbreaks increases, making effective monitoring crucial.

For consumers with questions regarding the recall, Western United Fish Company/Annasea Foods Group encourages them to contact their office at 425-558-7809 between 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. ET (07:00 to 15:30 PT) from Monday to Friday, or to reach out via email at [email protected].

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the need for vigilance in monitoring potential health risks associated with food products.
