Cornell Leaders Connect with Alumni at Shanghai Forum

Cornell University leaders embarked on a multistop journey across China and Asia in early November 2023, aimed at strengthening alumni connections, enhancing partnerships, and addressing pressing global issues. A significant highlight of this trip was the sixth annual Cornell-China Forum, hosted in Shanghai, which attracted a diverse group of Cornell alumni, Chinese scholars, and industry experts.

Exploring Global Challenges

The forum, a signature event organized by the Cornell China Center, focused on critical topics such as the evolving landscape of global higher education, sustainable development, aging societies, and the impact of artificial intelligence in education. Through various panel discussions, participants emphasized the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration and showcased innovative solutions to these complex challenges.

The delegation from Cornell included President Michael Kotlikoff, Vice Provost for International Affairs Wendy Wolford, and deans from the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. Their presence underscored the university’s commitment to fostering international dialogue and partnerships.

Engagement Across Cities

In addition to the forum in Shanghai, the itinerary for Cornell’s leaders included visits to several key locations. Some members of the delegation participated in celebrations at Peking University to mark the 20th anniversary of the China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CAPS) program at the Cornell China Center in Beijing. Others traveled to Guangzhou to launch the Cornell-China Sustainability Project, which will initially target the sustainable intensification of rice cultivation.

Furthermore, Cornell faculty members engaged with collaborators at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, focusing on discussions related to healthy aging. The trip also provided opportunities for university leaders to connect with alumni in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, and Hong Kong, strengthening the Cornell community across the region.
