Community Remembers John “Jack” Brown, 92, for His Legacy
John (Jack) Paul Brown, a beloved figure in the San Pedro community, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 92 years old. Born on March 10, 1933, in Long Beach, California, Jack’s life was marked by rich experiences and deep connections with those around him.
Jack’s upbringing in San Pedro was filled with memorable moments. He recalled fondly his childhood adventures, such as catching tadpoles at Averill Park and selling newspapers to sailors arriving in port. His early work at Helen Grace Chocolates showcased his entrepreneurial spirit, which would later flourish when he opened his own business, employing friends and colleagues. During World War II, Jack also supported the community as a Civilian Air Warden, reflecting his commitment to service.
Education and Early Career
Jack attended Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach. Before the construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, he regularly took a ferry across the harbor to reach school. His high school years were highlighted by a passion for athletics, particularly in track and field, where he earned numerous accolades as a distance runner. This dedication to sports continued through his college years, where he pursued a degree in Drafting and maintained his involvement in track.
Following his education, Jack joined Northrop Grumman, a prominent aerospace and defense technology company. His career trajectory took a turn when he decided to establish his own business, which allowed him to employ various individuals he had met throughout his professional journey.
A Life Filled with Love and Laughter
In 1969, Jack met Rita Cebula, the love of his life. They married on April 17, 1971, and together they welcomed two children: Dennis in 1972 and Julie in 1975. The couple was deeply involved in their community, particularly in their church, where Rita dedicated 25 years to teaching at Holy Trinity. Jack’s love for family was evident in the vacations they took together, as well as in his hobbies, which included gardening, sports, DIY projects, and coin collecting.
Jack was known for his unique sense of humor, which brought joy to many. Each day began for him with a cup of coffee, a crossword puzzle, and an attentive eye on the stock market. His legacy is carried on by his children, Dennis and Julie, as well as his grandchildren, Natalie and Vincent. He is also survived by his sister, Agnes Welsh, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife Rita, his parents Robert and Agnes Brown, his brother Robert, his sister Phyllis Smith, and his nephews Bob and Tom Smith.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, followed by burial at Green Hills Memorial Park. The family invites all who knew Jack to celebrate his life and sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com.
