China Launches Shenzhou 22 to Rescue Stranded Astronauts

China successfully launched the Shenzhou 22 spacecraft on November 28, 2023, to facilitate the return of three astronauts stranded on the Tiangong space station. This mission follows an incident involving the Shenzhou 20, which suffered damage that temporarily left its crew without a secure means of returning to Earth.

The astronauts aboard the Tiangong space station initially docked on November 1, 2023. Their return was complicated by the recent malfunction of the Shenzhou 20, which experienced a damaged window. Earlier this month, another crew, launched via the Shenzhou 21, faced a nine-day delay in their return due to similar issues. They ultimately managed to return safely, but their situation highlighted the risks associated with space travel.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, the Shenzhou 20 spacecraft will remain in orbit temporarily. It is scheduled for recovery and evaluation once conditions allow. The Chinese space program has determined that it does not meet the necessary safety standards for transporting astronauts.
