Beloved Educator and Naturalist David Ellis Brest Passes Away

David Ellis Brest, a respected educator and devoted family man, passed away peacefully at the age of 85. He was surrounded by his beloved wife, Patricia Brest, at the time of his death. A lifelong resident of Southern California, David’s legacy includes a profound impact on his family and the many students he inspired throughout his teaching career.

Early Life and Education

Born in San Gabriel, California, David was the youngest of three boys. His childhood was marked by a love for the outdoors, nurtured through family camping trips and adventures with his twin brother, Dennis Brest. This early connection to nature led him to pursue a degree in Forestry at the University of Oregon. He later earned a PhD in Biology from UCLA, which sparked a friendly rivalry with his brother, who was a loyal supporter of USC.

David dedicated 35 years of his life to teaching in the Biology Department at California State University, Dominguez Hills. He retired in 2003 but left an indelible mark on his students, often sharing his well-known lecture on photosynthesis during both light-hearted moments and serious discussions.

Family Life and Legacy

David met Patricia at CSUDH, where they quickly formed a strong bond over their shared interests and his charming sense of humor. The couple married in June 1987 and built a life together that reflected David’s commitment to family. He was known for his unwavering support and loyalty, not only to Patricia but also to his stepchildren: Gayle Heifetz, Shelley Merrill, and Fred (Cris) Pabst.

A dedicated family man, David brought calm and focus to every aspect of life, whether tackling complex puzzles or navigating challenging conversations. His reassuring presence was a guiding light for his family during difficult times. David’s love for nature was evident in the cherished memories of family camping trips to destinations such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Pismo Beach, and Sequoia National Park.

Following his passing, David’s ashes will be scattered in a sequoia grove beside the meadow where he and Patricia exchanged vows, a fitting tribute to his love for nature and family.

David is survived by his wife, Patricia, stepchildren, grandchildren including Kai and Alex Heifetz, Allie and Connor Merrill, and Casey and Jay Pabst, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean and Herbert Brest, his brother Loren Brest, and his twin brother Dennis Brest.

David Ellis Brest leaves behind a legacy of love, education, and an enduring appreciation for the natural world. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
