Trump Faces Criticism Over Comments on ICE’s Tactics
On November 14, 2025, letters to the editor highlighted significant concerns regarding the conduct of U.S. President Donald J. Trump and his administration. A letter from Broadalbin resident Jeff Pelky drew parallels between Trump and historical authoritarian figures, asserting that the president’s support for the tactics of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reflects a troubling trend towards fascism.
Concerns Over Authoritarianism
Pelky’s letter emphasized how various regimes throughout history, including those led by Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Putin, employed state forces to suppress dissent and maintain power. He expressed alarm at Trump’s recent remarks during a 60 Minutes interview, where the president stated, “I don’t think they have gone far enough” in reference to ICE’s enforcement strategies. Pelky warned that such statements indicate a potential erosion of democratic principles in the United States.
He further pointed to the role of state militias, notably the National Guard, suggesting that they are positioned to oppose what he perceives as a drift toward dictatorship. “Every state has a militia; it is the National Guard under each state’s governor,” Pelky wrote, implying that the governor’s authority is being undermined as Trump leverages the Guard against citizens without their consent.
Local Election Results and Community Spirit
In contrast to Pelky’s concerns about national leadership, another letter from Jackie Salvatore, the newly elected sheriff of Columbia County, expressed gratitude toward voters for their support. Salvatore, who has spent over three decades in law enforcement in the area, thanked the community for entrusting him with the role and pledged to serve with integrity. “This victory is because of you,” he stated, recognizing the contributions of volunteers and supporters during his campaign.
Salvatore emphasized his commitment to uphold law and order while working collaboratively with his team at the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. He looks forward to beginning his term in January 2026 and continuing the legacy of service that has defined his career.
Community Engagement in Local Culture
In a lighter note, Colleen M. Henry from Schoharie critiqued local food and beverage reviewer John Norris for not exploring breweries beyond the Schenectady area. Henry pointed out that the award-winning Wayward Lane Brewery, recognized in both 2023 and 2025, is located just 25 minutes west of Schenectady and encouraged Norris to expand his coverage. This reflects a desire among community members for increased recognition of local businesses and culture.
These letters underscore the diverse perspectives within the community, ranging from serious political concerns to a lighthearted call for greater local engagement in the culinary scene. The Gazette, which welcomes letters from all political viewpoints, continues to serve as a platform for public discourse and community connection.
