Trump and Zelensky Discuss Progress on Ukraine Peace Talks at Mar-a-Lago
Former U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, to discuss significant advancements in peace negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This marks their first meeting since October 2023, coinciding with a renewed intensity in diplomatic efforts.
After their over three-hour discussion, both leaders addressed the media, with Trump expressing optimism about the peace deal, stating that it is “95%” complete. “We could be very close. There are one or two very thorny issues, very tough issues. But I think we’re doing very well. We made a lot of progress today,” Trump informed reporters on Sunday.
The remaining contentious points primarily involve security guarantees for Ukraine and potential land swaps. Zelensky noted that U.S.-Ukraine security guarantees were agreed upon “100%,” while he indicated that discussions surrounding European security guarantees were “almost” finalized. He also mentioned that an agreement on the “military dimension” had been reached, although the economic plan for Ukraine is still “being finalized.”
In regard to land swaps, Trump advised Zelensky to consider making a deal promptly, citing the ongoing conflict in contested areas. Zelensky, however, reiterated his commitment to a national referendum on the matter, emphasizing that “it’s their land, the land, not of one person.”
Continued Diplomatic Engagement
Following their bilateral talks, Trump and Zelensky engaged with European leaders via phone, where many expressed commendation for the progress achieved. Despite the momentum, Trump indicated that while a deal seems imminent, it is still “a few weeks” away from being finalized.
Earlier in the day, Trump had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin prior to meeting Zelensky. He characterized their dialogue as “good and very productive” and mentioned that he plans to speak with Putin again later in the evening.
The discussions at Mar-a-Lago reflect a critical phase in the peace process, with unity among key international players essential for any potential agreement. As negotiations continue, the focus remains on addressing the unresolved issues that could pave the way for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
