Thousands Rally in Boston Against ICE Violence and U.S. Actions in Venezuela
Thousands gathered at Boston Common on September 30, 2023, to protest against recent shootings involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and U.S. military actions in Venezuela. The large demonstration highlighted community concerns over both domestic and foreign policies, uniting participants under the banner “No War At Home, No War Abroad.”
The protest began at the Massachusetts State House on Beacon Street, drawing a diverse crowd that included activists, political candidates, and representatives from various organizations. Among the speakers was Bonnie Jin, co-chair of the Boston chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, who criticized the actions of ICE. Jin stated, “We demand more from our elected officials… to do more to stop ICE from conducting this terror on our streets.” Her remarks underscored a growing frustration with perceived state violence against vulnerable communities.
Demonstrators carried signs demanding the withdrawal of ICE agents from Boston and paid tribute to Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother who was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. The agent involved, identified as Jonathan Ross by the Department of Homeland Security, has faced scrutiny following this incident. Protester Mark Davidson expressed his outrage regarding immigration policies, stating, “We need the people to change the government if we come out enough.”
The event concluded at Government Center, where participants observed a moment of silence in memory of individuals who have died in ICE custody. As names were read aloud, the somber act served as a poignant reminder of the human cost associated with immigration enforcement policies. This demonstration was part of a broader wave of protests occurring nationwide in response to recent ICE-related shootings in cities such as Minneapolis and Portland, Oregon.
The protests in Boston reflect a significant mobilization against U.S. immigration policies and foreign military actions, raising important questions about accountability and the protection of human rights. As the movement gains momentum, many activists are calling for systemic changes and increased oversight of agencies like ICE to ensure the safety and dignity of all community members.
