Major Closure on 60 Freeway in Diamond Bar to Support Traffic Improvements

State Route 60 in Diamond Bar, California, will experience a significant closure in both directions from midnight to 08:00 on March 24, 2024. This closure affects traffic between Lemon Avenue and Diamond Bar Boulevard and is part of ongoing initiatives aimed at alleviating congestion and enhancing safety along one of the busiest corridors in the United States.
In preparation for the closure, multiple on- and off-ramps along the 60 Freeway, as well as connectors to the Orange (57) Freeway, will begin shutting down as early as 19:00 on March 23. According to the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments, signed detour routes will be set up to guide drivers around the affected area. Motorists are strongly advised to plan their journeys in advance, consider alternative routes, and account for increased travel times.
Addressing Traffic Challenges
The closure is part of the 57/60 Confluence project, which seeks to reduce congestion, enhance safety, and improve overall traffic flow. Proposed improvements include redesigned ramps and interchanges, the addition of mainline and bypass lanes, and measures to facilitate safer traffic patterns by eliminating weaving.
This interchange connects Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino counties, accommodating more than 350,000 vehicles daily through Diamond Bar and the city of Industry. Due to heavy truck traffic, limited lane availability, and hazardous merging patterns, this area is recognized as the worst truck bottleneck in California and ranks as the seventh-worst in the nation, according to the American Transportation Research Institute. It also stands out as one of the highest locations for truck accidents in Southern California.
The temporary closure is crucial for supporting essential construction activities related to the project aimed at relieving this chokepoint. The closure will ensure the safety of motorists while crews work on demolishing a section of the existing Grand Avenue Bridge.
For up-to-date information on the closure and detour routes, the public can visit the project website at www.sgvcog.org/5760project or follow the project on social media at @5760Project.
