Los Angeles City Controller Launches Public Bathroom Locator App
Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia has introduced a new online tool designed to assist residents and visitors in locating public restrooms and drinking fountains throughout the city. The website, available at bathrooms.lacontroller.app, aims to address a pressing need for accessible facilities, particularly for the city’s unhoused population.
In a social media announcement, Mejia explained that the initiative emerged during the hot summer months when many individuals struggled to find restroom access. “We made this site because, in the summer, it was hot and we wanted to help our unhoused neighbors find a place to use the restroom and also drink water,” he stated in an Instagram video. The app not only highlights public restrooms but also indicates nearby drinking fountains, enhancing its utility for those in need.
Innovative Approach to Public Amenities
This new app could resonate with fans of the television character George Costanza, known for his humorous take on public restroom use. Mejia’s tool, which offers a comprehensive guide to facilities like the clean and accessible restroom at the Hollywood Bowl, represents a practical approach to urban living in a bustling city.
In addition to the restroom locator, Mejia has also launched a parking ticket dashboard at parkingtickets.lacontroller.app. This feature displays a heat map highlighting areas in Los Angeles where parking tickets are most frequently issued. The dashboard reveals that the downtown area, extending through Koreatown, generates the highest number of citations, with “no parking” and “street cleaning” violations topping the list of infractions.
These initiatives reflect Mejia’s commitment to transparency and public service, and they have garnered attention from voters concerned about parking regulations and restroom access. As he prepares for his re-election campaign in 2026, Mejia’s innovative approach to addressing community needs may play a significant role in his political strategy.
While the role of a city controller traditionally focuses on financial responsibilities, Mejia’s blend of technology and public service is redefining expectations. His creative outreach through social media and practical applications may serve as a model for other city officials aiming to connect with their constituents.
The developments around Mejia’s initiatives highlight a growing recognition of the importance of accessible public amenities in urban environments. By prioritizing the needs of residents and visitors, the Los Angeles City Controller’s office is setting a precedent for future city governance.
