London Doctor Faces Discipline Over Controversial Hamas Tweets
A senior paediatrician based in London is under scrutiny after being referred to a disciplinary tribunal for her controversial social media posts defending Hamas. Dr. Ellen Kriesels, a consultant at the Whittington Hospital, has openly expressed her support for the group, which many classify as a terrorist organization, and has criticized what she describes as “Jewish supremacy.”
The General Medical Council (GMC), the regulatory body overseeing medical professionals in the UK, initiated the referral following multiple instances where Dr. Kriesels voiced her opinions on social platforms. In one notable post from August, she commented on the October 7 events, stating, “Some Jews… say [October 7] was a pogrom… Always trying to frame the Jews as victims. So ridiculous. So excruciating. So exhausting.”
Dr. Kriesels further stated that the casualties in Gaza should not be blamed, regardless of their association with Hamas. “Do not whitewash the murder of Hamas members. They are a political party and oppressed resistance fighters. NOT terrorists,” she asserted. This stance has drawn significant backlash and raised concerns regarding her fitness to practice medicine.
Allegations of Discrimination and Public Protests
In addition to her online remarks, Dr. Kriesels has participated in various pro-Palestine demonstrations. Reports emerged of her being photographed holding an Israeli flag emblazoned with the phrase: “Rape, steal, cry, kill, cheat, lie.” Such actions have led to serious questions about her views and their implications for her role as a healthcare provider.
The Whittington NHS Health Trust has acknowledged the concerns surrounding Dr. Kriesels. A spokesperson stated, “We can confirm that we have heard the concerns raised about one of our employees. The employee concerned is not currently scheduled to be working at the Trust. However, it would not be appropriate to comment further on a confidential internal management issue.” The spokesperson emphasized that the health and care of the local community remain the Trust’s top priority.
Upcoming Tribunal Hearing
As the situation unfolds, Dr. Kriesels is set to attend a tribunal hearing on November 14, 2023, where the GMC will evaluate whether she can continue to practice medicine. The GMC has not disclosed specific details about the tribunal, which adds to the uncertainty surrounding the outcome.
The case has sparked widespread discussion about the boundaries of free speech for medical professionals and the impact of personal beliefs on public service roles. The JC has reached out to Dr. Kriesels for comment but has not received a response at this time.
The implications of this case extend beyond Dr. Kriesels herself, raising important questions about accountability, professional conduct, and the responsibilities of healthcare workers in a politically charged environment. As the hearing approaches, many are closely monitoring the situation for its potential impact on medical ethics and public trust in healthcare institutions.
