Educators Urged to Combat Rising Radicalism Through Civics

Recent attacks on politicians and public figures in the United States have intensified discussions surrounding political violence and radicalism. In the wake of these incidents, some experts argue for a renewed focus on civics education as a potential remedy to combat rising extremist sentiments, notably among younger individuals.

The alarming trend in political violence, including the assassination of prominent voices, reflects a disturbing shift in public attitudes. A YouGov survey conducted after the murder of commentator Charlie Kirk revealed that 11% of American adults believe violence is sometimes justified to achieve political goals. In stark contrast, 72% assert that it is never justified. Among younger adults aged 18 to 29, this figure rises to 19%, suggesting a troubling acceptance of violence within this demographic.

The survey highlighted a significant ideological divide. More than a quarter (26%) of respondents aged 44 and younger who identify as “liberal” indicated that violence may be justified, compared to only 7% of young conservatives. Furthermore, a 2025 study by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression found that students identifying as “very conservative” were more likely to endorse violence to silence opposing views than their “very liberal” counterparts, although those identifying as “democratic socialists” expressed the strongest support for such actions.

Generational Divide in Attitudes Towards Violence

The increasing endorsement of violence among university students is concerning. Approximately one-third of surveyed students expressed some level of support for using violence, a notable increase from one in five in 2020. This trend underscores the urgent need for policymakers to address the underlying issues contributing to radical sentiments.

A recent poll by the Carolina Journal reveals further insights into the attitudes of North Carolina voters regarding the American Founders and the principles underlying the nation’s founding. While nearly three-quarters of respondents expressed a positive view of the Founders, only 47% of those aged 18 to 34 shared this sentiment. This generational gap suggests a disconnect from the foundational values of the nation, which encompass individual liberty, representative government, and the rule of law.

The Case for Enhanced Civics Education

Given these troubling trends, experts like John Hood, a board member of the John Locke Foundation, advocate for prioritizing civics education. Hood emphasizes that the problem extends beyond higher education, affecting young people who do not attend college as well. He argues that a lack of engaging instruction on American civics and history contributes to the growing discontent among youth.

Hood points out that the American system of government is designed not to produce consensus but to manage disagreement and channel it towards productive ends. He asserts that understanding the principles of the American Founding is crucial for fostering a sense of civic responsibility and discouraging violent tendencies.
