Don Tracy Loans $2 Million to Fuel U.S. Senate Campaign

Former Illinois Republican Chairman Don Tracy has committed $2 million to his campaign for the Republican nomination for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat. Announced on Wednesday, this substantial loan underscores his ambition as he seeks to fill the position currently held by veteran U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, who plans to retire in 2027. Tracy’s candidacy is part of a crowded field that includes seven Republicans and eleven Democrats, competing for votes in the March 17, 2024 primary.

Tracy, a Springfield attorney, is relatively unknown outside the Illinois GOP circles but stands out as the most prominent figure among his Republican rivals. His decision to inject personal funds into his campaign signals a strong commitment to winning the nomination. “This shows how committed I am to winning this race so all of Illinois has a leader working for them to lower the cost of living and defend our Midwestern values,” he stated.

Having resigned from his leadership position within the Illinois GOP last year due to internal disputes, Tracy’s campaign aims to establish itself as a serious contender. As of July 1, none of his six GOP rivals had raised more than $15,000, highlighting Tracy’s financial advantage. However, to remain competitive, he may need to secure additional funding, especially if he advances past the primary.

On the Democratic side, candidates include U.S. Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi from Schaumburg and Robin Kelly from Matteson, along with Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton. Krishnamoorthi is a notable fundraiser, ending June with nearly $12 million in cash on hand, while Kelly had $2.2 million and Stratton reported over $666,000.

Tracy’s previous political experience includes a bid for the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor in 2010, where he finished third among six candidates. He also serves as outside counsel for Dot Foods, a prominent food distributor founded by his parents. The company is recognized for its inclusive work environment, a stance that contrasts with some political narratives from the past administration.

As the campaign progresses, Tracy’s financial backing could play a crucial role in shaping the dynamics of the upcoming primaries, particularly as he vies for the support of Illinois voters eager for change.
