David Spade Critiques ‘Christmas-Free’ Tree Lightings at Mall Ceremony
David Spade expressed his discontent with the omission of the term “Christmas” during a recent tree-lighting ceremony at a mall, highlighting what he perceives as a growing disregard for the holiday. Speaking on the latest episode of his podcast, “Fly on the Wall,” alongside fellow comedian Dana Carvey, Spade shared his astonishment at the organizers’ decision to avoid using the word “Christmas” while celebrating a Christmas tree.
Spade, 61, noted that he was taken aback to see a promotional material that referred to the event simply as a “tree-lighting ceremony.” He remarked, “I will say that Christmas is taking a little bit of a beating lately,” underscoring his belief that the holiday is being increasingly sidelined. His comments reflect a broader sentiment among some individuals who feel that Christmas is being diluted in favor of more inclusive language.
Comedians Share Concerns Over Holiday Language
During the podcast episode, which aired on December 3, 2023, Spade and Carvey engaged in a lively discussion about the implications of avoiding mentions of Christmas. “So it’s just a tree? … But to consciously avoid that, then what is the tree for?” Spade questioned, referring to the apparent disconnect between the event’s purpose and its presentation. Carvey, 67, echoed Spade’s sentiments, asserting that he had never encountered anyone from a different faith who felt offended by the presence of a Christmas tree.
The conversation touched on the evolving nature of the holiday in contemporary America. Carvey remarked, “If you’re of faith, it’s about Christianity. But I think at this point in America, it’s just Christmas. It’s a fun holiday.” Both comedians expressed frustration with what they perceive as an increasing trend of political correctness surrounding holiday celebrations.
Spade voiced his concerns about the so-called “thought police,” suggesting that there is an unfair scrutiny of language associated with Christianity. He noted that Christianity seems to be treated differently compared to other religions, stating, “Like is this where we get the hammer? You can’t say that about anyone else.”
Addressing Global Christian Persecution
Spade’s remarks also took a more serious tone as he referenced the persecution of Christians around the world. Citing a report from International Christian Concern, he highlighted the rising violence against Christians in countries such as Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The report indicated alarming levels of killings, abductions, and forced displacement in these regions. Additionally, organizations, including the U.S. State Department, have classified Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” due to its troubling history of violence against Christians.
This discussion adds layers to Spade’s earlier frustrations regarding the holiday’s representation in public spaces. He emphasized the importance of referring to the tree as a “Christmas tree,” while also expressing a desire not to offend others. “I still don’t want to offend people … You’re not allowed to slam someone else’s religion,” he stated, indicating a wish for mutual respect in conversations about faith.
The issue of holiday language has emerged as a contentious topic in various cities, including Portland, where an annual tree-lighting event was also criticized for not using the word “Christmas.” Critics accused the event’s organizers of attempting to erase the holiday from public discourse. In response to the backlash, the office of Portland Mayor Keith Wilson later clarified that the event was officially referred to as a “Christmas Tree Lighting.”
As the holiday season approaches, discussions about inclusivity and the representation of various faiths continue to resonate in public discourse. Spade’s comments reflect a segment of the population that feels increasingly concerned about the portrayal of Christmas and the cultural shifts surrounding it.
