Community Forum Tackles Rising Teen Violence in Gilbert

As concerns over teen violence escalate, community leaders, parents, and law enforcement officials convened at a forum in Gilbert, Arizona, on August 27, 2023. Hosted by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and the Chandler Police Department, the event aimed to address the alarming increase in violent incidents among youth and explore preventive measures.
The forum was prompted by recent tragedies, including the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Michael Montoya II and a separate assault on another teenager over a pair of shoes. These incidents reflect a troubling trend, prompting officials to take action. According to Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, “The statistics are concerning. We’re here to educate people about the prevalence of teen violence and to come up with community-oriented solutions.”
Engagement and Communication as Key Strategies
Experts at the forum discussed the critical role of communication between parents and children in mitigating violence. Chandler Police Chief Bryan Chapman emphasized that teen violence is not an unavoidable reality. He noted, “Engaging in those conversations and having tangible outcomes through consistent partnerships are essential for making progress.”
Families directly impacted by violence also shared their experiences. Melissa Ciconte, the stepmother of Preston Lord, who died after a brutal attack outside a Halloween party last year, highlighted the importance of open dialogue. “Everybody thinks that will never happen to their child,” Ciconte said. “And unfortunately, it happened to Preston.” She urged parents to engage with their teens about their lives to help reduce the likelihood of violence.
Participants like Samantha Kluger, who attended the event with her son Ben, expressed the urgency of the message. Kluger stated, “As a mother of a teen child, it’s important to listen because one choice can completely alter your life.” This sentiment resonated strongly among attendees, reinforcing the need for proactive discussions around decision-making.
Community Solutions and Future Steps
The forum not only served as a platform for discussion but also aimed to foster community partnerships that promote safety and well-being among youth. By collaborating with local organizations and engaging young people, officials believe they can create a supportive environment that discourages violence.
The attendees left with a renewed sense of hope and a commitment to addressing the root causes of teen violence. As Rachel Mitchell remarked, “We know that we’ll never eradicate teen violence, but if we can help decrease the likelihood of it, that’s beneficial.” The collective effort of the community, parents, and law enforcement will be crucial in shaping a safer future for the youth of Gilbert and beyond.
