Women from various backgrounds will gather in Craven County to participate in the 2026 Women Build program organized by Habitat for Humanity of Craven County. This initiative, taking place from February 25 to February 28, 2026, aims to foster an inclusive environment where women can volunteer, learn new skills, and form meaningful connections while addressing pressing housing needs in the community.

According to Tracey Lilly, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Craven County, the Women Build program is designed to empower women and enhance their roles in the construction process. “This program provides an opportunity for women from all walks of life to join and work together for a common goal,” Lilly stated. All experience levels are welcome, with no prior construction skills required.

The event is sponsored by the Coastal Women’s Forum, which aims to support both Habitat for Humanity and the women participating in the program. Board member Heather Thornburg expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “This sponsorship allows us to not only support the organization financially but physically. It’s a true building situation.”

The Women Build will operate on a flexible schedule, with shifts available on February 25 from noon to 4 p.m., February 26 and February 27 from 8 a.m. to noon, and February 28 with options from 8 a.m. to noon or noon to 4 p.m. Participants may also contribute $20 per person for each volunteer shift to aid in Habitat for Humanity’s Home Sweet Home campaign.

Lilly noted that the organization is aiming to raise $150,000 for the construction of a new home in the Pembroke community of New Bern. This project will serve as the focal point for this year’s Women Build activities, reinforcing the commitment to improving living conditions for families, particularly women and children who often face the greatest challenges.

For those interested in volunteering, applications and orientation sign-ups can be completed at cravencountyhabitat.org. The Women Build program not only addresses critical housing needs but also fosters a sense of community and collaboration among participants, reinforcing the notion that together, women can make a significant impact.
