U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1965 Celebrates 60th Reunion
The 60th reunion of the U.S. Naval Academy’s Class of 1965 took place in March 2025, drawing alumni back to the campus known as “The Yard.” This gathering served as a powerful reminder of the passage of time and the enduring bonds formed during their military education. Alumni reflected on their shared experiences, acknowledging both the challenges of aging and the pride of their past.
A poignant moment during the reunion was a memorial service held for the 23 classmates who lost their lives while serving in the military. Of the 801 graduates, seven were killed in combat, and the service provided an opportunity for alumni to honor their sacrifices. The emotional weight of remembering these individuals underscored the gravity of their commitment to the nation.
Returning to the academy stirred memories for many attendees. One alumnus recalled the overwhelming intensity of life as a plebe in 1961, recognizing that the rigorous training and camaraderie formed during those years were invaluable. The reunion also highlighted the diversity within the class. While they once marched in uniform, the alumni now represented a wide range of backgrounds and political views, demonstrating that it is possible to engage in respectful discourse despite differences.
The reunion brought forth a renewed sense of optimism for the future, particularly in observing the current midshipmen. Many alumni noted the high spirits and dedication of the young men and women going through their daily routines. Their enthusiasm and commitment to service stood in stark contrast to the often negative perceptions of today’s youth.
At Alumni Hall, the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, Lieutenant General Borgschulte USMC, addressed alumni from the classes of 1965, 1975, and 2005. He spoke about the academy’s standards of excellence, accountability, and the importance of keeping politics out of the institution. His remarks resonated with attendees, many of whom appreciated his focus on preparing future leaders for the challenges of military service.
During the reunion, a palpable sense of patriotism emerged. Alumni participated in ceremonial events, including a full-dress parade and a football game, where they joined in singing the National Anthem. The respect shown for the American flag and the values it represents stood in contrast to the negative imagery often portrayed in media, highlighting a deep-seated reverence for their country.
This celebration of the past was not merely nostalgic; it served as a reminder of the values and traditions that continue to shape the U.S. Naval Academy. As alumni reflected on their experiences and the sacrifices of their classmates, they left with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to their country.
