Understanding the dynamics of online dating has taken a significant step forward, according to a recent study published in the journal PLOS ONE. Researchers from an international team analyzed the behaviors of heterosexual users on a Czech online dating app, revealing that men’s dating strategies often do not yield the desired results. The findings indicate that while men typically strive to pursue partners deemed more desirable, successful matches are more likely to occur between individuals with similar levels of perceived desirability.

The Study’s Methodology

The research focused on data collected in July 2017, involving over 2,000 heterosexual users in Prague and 624 users in Brno. Employing social network analysis, the researchers mapped “swipes”—expressions of interest—between users, creating a hierarchy of desirability based on the number of swipes each user received. The study’s abstract notes that “the structure of the networks is considerably hierarchical,” with women generally ranking higher in this hierarchy. This disparity largely stems from a significant gender imbalance on the app, where the number of male users exceeded that of female users.

The researchers identified a clear gender-based pattern in dating behaviors. Men predominantly acted as “pursuers,” sending more messages than they received, while women took on the role of “choosers,” receiving more messages than they sent. This imbalance influences the nature of interactions on the platform.

The study revealed striking differences in how men and women approach potential matches. Men typically expressed interest in women perceived as more desirable than themselves. In contrast, women tended to pursue men with similar levels of desirability. Interestingly, the research also noted that women often chose partners who were slightly less desirable than themselves. The dynamics shifted when examining successful matches—instances of “mutual swipes” indicating reciprocal interest. The researchers found that these matches predominantly occurred between individuals of similar desirability. They emphasized that this pattern is largely driven by rejection rather than an initial preference for similarity.
