Ohio State Buckeyes Achieve Record Graduation Success Rates
Ohio State University has achieved remarkable academic success among its student-athletes, according to the latest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) report from the NCAA. The Buckeyes recorded a single-year GSR of 94 and a four-year rolling average of 93, marking the highest figures in the university’s history for the third consecutive year. This achievement highlights the academic dedication of Ohio State’s athletes, who are excelling both in the classroom and in their respective sports.
The NCAA’s GSR is designed to provide a more accurate measure of student-athletes’ progress by accounting for transfer students and mid-year enrollees. The impressive figures reflect the academic performance of freshman cohorts from the academic years 2015-2016 to 2018-2019. In a statement released by Ohio State University, Faculty Athletics Representative John E. Davidson emphasized the importance of academic achievement within the athletic program, noting that “these high scores reflect a culture of care that values academic achievement as a prime component of the world-class student-athlete experience.”
Ohio State’s academic success is not confined to a select few teams. A total of fifteen teams achieved a perfect GSR of 100, spanning various sports, including artistic swimming and wrestling. Furthermore, an additional eight teams scored above 90, demonstrating a widespread commitment to academic excellence across Ohio State’s athletic programs.
Significantly, twelve teams either maintained or improved their GSR from the previous year, showcasing the dedication of both coaches and the Student Athlete Support Services Office. Davidson remarked, “That two-thirds of the 25 teams maintaining or improving on last year’s score attained a perfect 100 speaks to the commitment of coaches, the support of the Student Athlete Support Services Office staff, and, most of all, the incredible dedication of student-athletes to succeed to the utmost of their abilities in all their endeavors.”
The Buckeyes’ football team is also excelling academically, achieving a program-best GSR score of 89 for the fourth consecutive year. This achievement is particularly noteworthy for a program that often garners attention for its athletic accomplishments. The consistent academic performance of Ohio State’s student-athletes sets a strong example of prioritizing education alongside sports, reinforcing the ethos that being a student comes first and being an athlete second.
With these outstanding results, Ohio State University continues to lead in fostering a culture of academic success within collegiate athletics, illustrating that commitment to education and athletic performance can indeed go hand in hand.
