New Film ‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’ Delivers Heartfelt Narrative
The film “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” invites viewers to explore the paths not taken, symbolically represented as doors not opened. Released in theaters on March 15, 2024, this third feature by director Kogonada showcases a narrative that balances high concepts with simplicity. The film stars Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell as single strangers drawn together by fate.
The story begins with Farrell’s character, David, who is on the phone discussing attending a wedding alone. He appears content until he discovers his car has a restraining clamp, prompting him to enter a car rental agency. The agency features a quirky mechanic, played by Kevin Kline, and a humorous cashier portrayed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for her role in “Fleabag.” David ultimately rents a 1994 Saturn SL, encouraged to opt for the GPS system, which he might need on his journey.
At the wedding, situated hundreds of miles away and amid heavy rain, David meets Sarah, played by Robbie, who lives in a different part of the same city. Their initial interactions involve playful banter, including a humorous marriage proposal from Sarah. She candidly expresses her fear of hurting David, a sentiment that resonates throughout their shared experiences.
As David and Sarah embark on their journey, they confront portals to their pasts and the choices that shape their identities. The film navigates the complexities of attraction and hesitation, avoiding the potential for a syrupy narrative. Writer Seth Reiss, known for his work on “The Menu,” provides a screenplay that skims but does not fully delve into the characters’ backgrounds, offering a glimpse into their motivations.
Kogonada’s direction is visually striking, a continuation of his acclaimed work in films like “Columbus” and “After Yang.” His style, complemented by cinematographer Benjamin Loeb, captures the film’s emotional depth with exquisite composition. The score, crafted by renowned Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi, known for his collaborations with anime filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, enhances the film’s atmosphere.
The performances of the leads are particularly noteworthy. Farrell, following his acclaimed work in “The Penguin,” delivers a nuanced portrayal that aligns perfectly with the film’s themes. Robbie’s performance is equally compelling, balancing vulnerability with strength as Sarah grapples with her painful past while navigating her attraction to David.
“A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” is a film that encourages audiences to reflect on their own journeys, guided by a chatty GPS voiced by Jodie Turner-Smith. The film’s R rating is due to language, but its heartfelt narrative and strong performances make it a worthwhile experience. For those seeking a film that intertwines humor with a deeper emotional exploration, this journey is one to embark upon.
