NDSU Sorority Prioritizes Safety with Crisis Response Training
Members of the Kappa Delta sorority at North Dakota State University recently participated in a safety training session aimed at enhancing their preparedness for potential emergencies. The training, conducted by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office on August 19, 2023, focused on crisis response techniques and self-defense strategies relevant to college students.
As students return to the Fargo-Moorhead area for the new academic year, sorority leaders emphasized the importance of equipping members with practical skills. Although the university police also provide safety training for various campus organizations, the involvement of the sheriff’s office added a layer of expertise. Notably, one member of the sorority is the niece of a deputy from the sheriff’s office, fostering a personal connection to the training.
Empowering Students Through Self-Defense
During the session, deputies demonstrated various self-defense techniques to a group of 58 women. The training included instruction on how to escape from a choke hold and recommendations for carrying protective tools, such as brass knuckles. This hands-on approach aimed to empower participants and instill confidence in their ability to respond to threatening situations.
Skylar Uglem, president of the Kappa Delta sorority, articulated the group’s motivation for the training. “I think it’s important just to be proactive. As college girls, you can be nervous about the kind of world we live in today, and so it’s important to, just like I said, be proactive about certain things,” she stated.
The sorority’s initiative reflects a broader trend among college organizations prioritizing safety and well-being. By engaging in such training, members not only enhance their personal security but also foster a supportive community where safety is a shared responsibility.
Additional Safety Resources for Students
In addition to the training provided by the sheriff’s office, university students have access to the campus escort service. This service operates both on and off campus and can be accessed through the Path Light app, reinforcing the university’s commitment to ensuring student safety.
The safety training session represents a proactive step taken by the Kappa Delta sorority, aligning with the increasing emphasis on personal safety among students. As they navigate the challenges of college life, equipping young women with self-defense skills and awareness can significantly contribute to a safer campus environment.
