An exhibition featuring the nature-inspired artwork of Louise Bacon-Ogden is currently on display at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center in Arcata, California, running through December 2023. Known for her intricate black-and-white pieces, Bacon-Ogden has expanded her artistic repertoire to include vibrant color works as a result of encouragement from friends and her own artistic explorations.

Bacon-Ogden describes her style as a blend of minute detail executed in ink or graphite, alongside her growing passion for color. “I describe myself as a black-and-white artist,” she stated. “I am also fond of ink wash, scratchboard, sumi-e (Japanese ink painting), and calligraphy.” Her journey into color began when friends suggested she explore new avenues in her art, prompting her to take classes in oil painting, colored pencil, oil pastels, and watercolor pencil.

Watercolor, in particular, presented a challenge for Bacon-Ogden. She embarked on numerous classes, including a memorable plein air watercolor tour to Greece in 2018, which she credits as a transformative experience. “The Greek trip was a ‘light bulb’ experience,” she remarked, noting that it boosted her confidence and subsequently improved her watercolor skills.

As the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a shift in teaching methods, Bacon-Ogden adapted by offering virtual classes through the “Art for the Young at Heart” program. This period of isolation allowed her to experiment further with her art. “YouTube helped me discover a watercolor technique that is just perfect for me: loose watercolor,” she explained. This blend of traditional black-and-white detail with loose watercolor impressions became a hallmark of her recent works.

Bacon-Ogden’s passion extends beyond her own artwork to teaching others. She conducts in-person classes in various media at multiple venues, including the Center for Spiritual Living, OLLI through Cal Poly Humboldt, and several senior centers such as Silvercrest and Alder Bay. Her classes cater to a wide range of ages, from 10 years old to adults. “My goal is to turn anyone into a creative soul,” she stated with enthusiasm.
