Mount Carmel Secures 17th State Title with Impressive 20-3 Win

Mount Carmel High School triumphed in the Class 8A state championship, defeating Oswego High School 20-3 at Huskie Stadium on December 3, 2025. This victory marks the school’s remarkable 17th title in its history, solidifying its position as a powerhouse in Illinois high school football.

Cullen Winters, a junior defensive back, played a pivotal role in the game with a crucial punt block that led to a touchdown. Recalling the moment, Winters said, “Earlier in the game, I faked the move outside and I went inside. I saw the chance at a block was there, so I did it again and I got it.” His efforts energized the Mount Carmel team, particularly in the third quarter when Gavin Conjar returned the blocked punt for a touchdown.

The Caravan’s success was further bolstered by senior quarterback Emmett Dowling, who not only ran for a touchdown but also completed a touchdown pass. The victory capped off an undefeated season for Mount Carmel, finishing with a record of 14-0 and marking their first championship in the Class 8A category during this title-winning streak.

Special teams played a critical part in the Caravan’s strategy. The team’s first two scores were set up by exceptional special teams play, which was necessary due to the challenging cold conditions and strong defensive efforts from Oswego. Senior punter Dean Kemph managed to pin Oswego deep inside their own territory late in the second quarter, setting up a short field that led to Dowling’s 1-yard touchdown run, giving Mount Carmel a 6-3 lead at halftime.

Kemph emphasized the importance of preparation, stating, “We practice special teams a ton during the week. We’re very diligent. We were just in the right place at the right time from going through so many reps and we got it down.”

As the second half commenced, Mount Carmel’s defense showcased its dominance, allowing only three first downs throughout the game. Following a successful defensive stand against Oswego’s opening possession of the half, Winters executed his successful block that led to the touchdown return by Conjar. The defensive coordination between Winters and Conjar proved essential, with Conjar noting their strong connection on the field.

Winters, who had missed his entire sophomore season due to a back injury, expressed pride in his performance. “Coming into the season, I wasn’t sure if I was going to play that much. By the end, I was in all the time and making plays. I worked hard the whole offseason on my skills. I was ready to make something happen.”

Mount Carmel’s defensive strategy was further solidified by junior linebacker Roman Igwebuike, who contributed with an interception, limiting Oswego to just 143 yards of offense and an average of 2.8 yards per play. Winters highlighted the team’s early-game strategy, stating, “Early in the game, we completely stopped their run, so we knew they had to look to pass.”

The Caravan’s defensive unit remained resolute, especially during a critical moment late in the third quarter when Oswego faced a first-and-goal situation from the 6-yard line. Winters and Conjar successfully forced four consecutive incomplete passes, thwarting any scoring opportunity for the opposition. Dowling later sealed the game with a 4-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Marshaun Thornton in the fourth quarter.

Reflecting on the team’s achievement, Mount Carmel coach Jordan Lynch praised the legacy of the program, noting, “We have a lot of legacy kids, players whose fathers played here or their brothers.” Winters embodies this legacy, as both of his brothers were part of previous championship teams. He remarked, “After having to watch all the guys last year, this is a great feeling being part of this legacy.”

The victory not only adds another trophy to Mount Carmel’s storied history but also reinforces the team’s commitment to excellence and resilience in the face of adversity. As the celebration continued, the Caravan players lifted the championship trophy high, a testament to their hard work and determination throughout the season.
