Minnesota Unveils Its First ‘Mirror Cabin’ This Fall

A unique lodging experience is set to debut in Minnesota this fall with the introduction of the state’s first ÖÖD House, a “mirror cabin” designed to blend seamlessly into its natural surroundings. Nestled on 5.3 acres of rugged land just outside Crosby, the cabin features floor-to-ceiling mirrored glass walls that reflect the forest and sky, ensuring a sense of privacy while providing a panoramic view of the tranquil mine-pit lake it overlooks.
Co-owner and co-creator Meghan Zoesch emphasized the vision behind the project, stating, “We wanted to plop this mirror cabin right in the middle of a totally natural landscape, so that it feels like the cabin almost disappears.” This approach underlines the couple’s commitment to creating a lodging experience that feels both integrated and immersive.
The Zoesch couple, who founded the Cuyuna Cabin Collection, began their journey in 2022 with a goal of renovating old cabins into stylish rental properties. Their latest addition, the ÖÖD House, is their fifth property and stands out for its sleek design and minimal environmental footprint. Popularized in Europe, the ÖÖD House brand caught the couple’s attention during a trip to Tennessee two years ago, inspiring them to invest in a pre-assembled unit even before securing a location.
After extensive research, Jake Zoesch took the initiative to contact local landowners in the Cuyuna area. His efforts paid off when he discovered the perfect lakeside property located just two miles from the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, known for its extensive mountain biking trails and access to picturesque lakes. The new site offers a private beach and opportunities for activities such as fishing, kayaking, and relaxing by the water.
To enhance the guest experience, Jake is developing additional amenities, including a firepit area, lakeside lounge, hot tub, and custom sauna complete with a classic bucket dump. A mural by Minnesota artist Dani Liana, featuring the message “Love You to the Lake and Back,” will serve as an inviting backdrop for photos. On rainy days, guests can take advantage of the property’s Little Free Library or watch movies using the indoor projector.
In contrast to the cozy, social atmosphere of other rentals in the Cuyuna Cabin Collection, the ÖÖD House is intended to provide a tranquil retreat into nature. Meghan remarked, “We don’t want to just be lodging or a hotel. We want to be a full experience for people so that when they come to our properties, they can get out and explore Crosby and Cuyuna, but also they can just stay in and have a good experience.”
Prior to entering the hospitality industry, Meghan worked as a broadcast news reporter, while Jake was involved in his family’s auto body shop in Milwaukee. They credit Jake’s parents for instilling in them the importance of customer service. Living in the area allows the Zoesch couple to be hands-on with their properties, ensuring that they are attentive to guest needs, whether it involves purchasing new amenities or making repairs.
Crosby, once a mining town, has evolved into a vibrant outdoor adventure hub. The Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area boasts over 70 miles of world-class mountain biking trails, winding through stunning landscapes, and offering ample opportunities for paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing.
The ÖÖD House is expected to open for bookings in mid-September 2023. Reservations will be made available through the Cuyuna Cabin Collection’s website, with details to be announced on their Instagram page. As the couple prepares to welcome guests, they remain committed to providing a unique experience that combines comfort with the beauty of Minnesota’s natural environment.
