Methodist Churches Unite to Serve Free Weekly Meals in Newton

In an effort to support local residents, First United Methodist Church in Newton is offering free meals every Wednesday, open to anyone in the community. Volunteers gather weekly to prepare and serve hot meals, ensuring that no one goes hungry while fostering a sense of togetherness.

Community Engagement and Support

Individuals wishing to partake in the meals need not be members of the church; they simply need to arrive, find a seat, and enjoy their meal in a welcoming environment. Bob Lane, a dedicated member of the church, noted that the congregation has organized similar initiatives for many years. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteers adapted by providing drive-up meal services.

Currently, the meals are served in the church’s basement, where an average of 40 to 50 people gather each week. Lane highlighted the community’s response when a call for volunteers was made, noting that twelve individuals stepped forward to help. “People show up and volunteer their time, prepare it, serve it, and clean up afterward,” he said. “We hope it will grow if we can get the word out. There’s no charge!”

Every Wednesday, a new, freshly prepared meal is featured, with additional support from St. Luke United Methodist Church, which provides meals on the third Wednesday of each month. The collaborative effort continues to attract families, with activities and Bible lessons available for children following the meal.

Fulfilling Community Needs

The free meals program is not merely a gesture; it addresses a genuine need in the community. Lane pointed to the contributions of other faith-based organizations, such as Discover Hope 517 Ministry, which also provide regular meals and socialization opportunities. This outreach can be particularly meaningful for those facing food insecurity.

Moreover, Grace United Pentecostal Church contributes to this effort by hosting a free community meal on the second Wednesday of each month from 17:00 to 18:00. Lane expressed satisfaction in knowing that his church and others are actively reaching out to the community. “It makes us feel like we’re reaching out; we’re not just sticking to our own little church,” he commented. “We want to do what we can to help the community.”

The free meals at First United Methodist Church are available every Wednesday from 17:30 to 18:30 at 210 N. Second Ave. E., in Newton. This initiative exemplifies how local congregations can work together to meet the needs of their community while providing a warm and inviting atmosphere for all.
