M. Kate Clark, Esteemed Educator, Passes Away at 94

M. Kate Clark, a respected educator and community leader, passed away on July 30, 2025, at the age of 94. A longtime resident of Morgantown, West Virginia, she spent her final days at Sundale Nursing Home, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to education and community service.

Born on May 31, 1931, in Weston, West Virginia, Kate was the only child of Enos and Ona Jones Clark. She grew up on the family farm in Roanoke, which is now part of Stonewall Jackson Lake State Resort. After graduating from Weston High School in 1948, she furthered her education at West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics.

A Distinguished Academic Career

Dr. Clark continued her academic pursuits at West Virginia University, where she obtained a master’s degree in 1957 and an Ed.D. in 1976. Early in her career, she taught high school home economics in both Ohio and Maryland before joining the WVU Extension Service in 1957. In her role as a home demonstration agent in Ritchie and Wood counties, she made significant contributions to consumer education.

One of the highlights of her career was assisting West Virginia bed and breakfast operators in organizing their statewide association in 1991. She authored numerous educational publications that were distributed throughout the state, significantly impacting the community. As a clothing specialist, she mentored hundreds of 4-H style revue participants during State 4-H Roundups at WVU Jackson’s Mill and taught various courses in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences.

Community Involvement and Legacy

Kate’s commitment to community service extended beyond the classroom. She was an active member and held leadership positions in several professional organizations, including the American Association of University Women and the Phi Upsilon Home Economics honorary. She also contributed her time to the Suncrest Area Kiwanis Club for 25 years, where she served as club president and division lieutenant governor, earning recognition as a George F. Hixson Fellow for her outstanding service.

A dedicated member of the Suncrest United Methodist Church, she was involved with the United Women in Faith, further exemplifying her commitment to her community and her faith. Kate’s influence reached many, and she is survived by numerous relatives and close friends, including Jane Lucal of Sandusky, Ohio, Ann Powers of Rockville, Maryland, and local friends such as Betty Alexander and Joyce Bower.

A private graveside committal service will take place at the Old Masonic Cemetery in Weston, officiated by Rev. Larry Buckland. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hastings Funeral Home.
