The Los Angeles Times secured first place in the 2025 Online Journalism Awards for its impressive portfolio of newsletters. The awards, presented by the Online News Association, celebrate exceptional achievements in storytelling, technical innovation, and community impact within digital journalism. The winners were revealed during a virtual ceremony on August 28, 2025.

The Times was recognized in the excellence in newsletters (portfolio) category for its diverse offerings, which include Essential California, The Wild, L.A. on the Record, Dodgers Dugout, and In Case of Fire. “We are thrilled to see The Times’ newsletters recognized by the Online Journalism Awards,” said Karim Doumar, head of newsletters at the L.A. Times. He noted that the newsletter program is continuously evolving, highlighting the dedication and creativity of the team behind it.

In his award submission, Doumar emphasized the significance of fostering strong connections between reporters and their audiences. He stated that the Times’ newsletter portfolio is built on the principle that a genuine voice and thoughtful relationships between writers and readers are essential for the future of journalism. This focus on community engagement has contributed to the program’s growth and its recognition at the awards.

Among its achievements, The Wild was also named a finalist in the excellence in newsletters (single newsletter) category. Written by staff writer Jaclyn Cosgrove, this weekly newsletter serves as a comprehensive guide for Los Angeles’ vibrant urban outdoor community. It showcases opportunities to explore, learn about, and coexist with the city’s natural surroundings, appealing to those with a passion for outdoor activities.
