Kim Kardashian Launches Controversial SKIMS Thong, Sparks Debate

Kim Kardashian has stirred significant conversation with her latest launch for SKIMS, introducing a thong adorned with synthetic pubic hair. Titled the Ultimate Bush micro string thong, the controversial underwear retails for $32 and has already sold out since its debut on October 3, 2023. While some critics have deemed the product “obscene,” others hail Kardashian as a marketing innovator.
The launch aligns with Kardashian’s established pattern of provocative marketing strategies. According to Amelia Ward, a brand strategist based in Manhattan, the Kardashian family’s brand thrives on controversy. Ward stated, “The Kardashians, as a brand, thrive off of controversy and shock factor.” This approach has not only fueled their fame but has also influenced societal perceptions of beauty and body image.
Kardashian’s announcement comes amid a cultural resurgence in embracing natural body hair, as seen with celebrities like Doja Cat and Julia Fox, who have showcased their body hair at various events. Ward suggests that Kardashian’s thong offers an unconventional solution for those who have opted for laser hair removal, allowing them to mimic a natural look in a synthetic form.
The marketing strategy has drawn comparisons to other celebrity ventures, notably Gwyneth Paltrow’s infamous candle, “This Smells Like My Vagina,” which sold for $75. Kardashian appears to be capitalizing on a similar concept, tapping into a niche that has garnered significant public interest.
One notable aspect of the launch is the promotional video that accompanied it. Featuring a vintage-style game show titled “Does the Carpet Match the Drapes?”, the ad has attracted over 4 million views across Instagram and TikTok. The playful nod to 1970s nostalgia has generated buzz, but reactions among fashion experts remain mixed.
Fashion stylist Samantha Brown expressed skepticism about the thong’s long-term viability in the market, stating, “Will they sell this product to die-hard fans? Absolutely. Do I believe this is going to spark anything beyond a blip of media attention? No.” Brown suggests the thong is tailored for social media engagement rather than lasting fashion impact.
Similarly, fashion expert Dawn Del Russo compared the hairy thong to the SKIMS nipple bra, which gained attention during its release in October 2023. Del Russo is less optimistic about the thong’s success, predicting, “I can’t see them enhancing a look, besides drawing attention and making strangers say, ‘What is that?’”
As the fashion world continues to grapple with evolving standards of beauty, Kardashian’s latest creation serves as a testament to her ability to provoke discussion. Whether viewed as a bold statement or merely a gimmick, the Ultimate Bush micro string thong has undeniably carved out its place in the ongoing dialogue about body image and femininity in contemporary culture.
