Helena’s Used Furniture Store Revives Vintage Charm for Locals

A new furniture store has opened its doors in Helena, offering residents a chance to add vintage flair to their homes. Helena’s Used Furniture Store began operations at 1440 Gallatin Ave. on August 9, 2023, with owners Keith and Deborah Brugman leading the venture. The couple, who have a combined experience of approximately 30 years in the furniture industry, aim to strike a balance between modern and antique styles.
Deborah, who manages Scandinavian Designs Furniture in Helena, expressed her enthusiasm for the new store. “This has been very fun,” she stated. “I think it offers a style that’s in between new and old, and it’s evolving our own taste as we search for pieces to sell.” The Brugmans, fifth-generation Montanans, are also parents to a 22-year-old son, Aree, who is set to join them in the business.
While the couple is still juggling their primary jobs—Keith operates the city’s Great Northern Carousel—they have already made significant progress in their new venture. In just four weeks since opening, the store has sold 80% of its initial inventory. “I could see us expanding and hiring more people in about six months,” Deborah added.
The inspiration for the store stems from Deborah’s late friend, Paula Bonar, who ran a nearby furniture consignment store called Elements Consign and Design. After Bonar’s passing nearly eight years ago, Deborah felt compelled to honor her memory by creating a space that reimagines and revitalizes old furniture. “Paula was amazing at reimagining old pieces that many would otherwise discard,” she said. “That’s what we try to do here, to give life to furniture and prevent it from going to the landfill.”
Unlike Bonar’s consignment model, which required a higher price point for profitability, Deborah opted to focus on affordability. “If I were to do consignment, I’d have to make items double the price to make a profit,” she explained. “I wanted to make the prices affordable for me to bring to the floor, and for my customers to take home.”
Despite the store’s compact size, the Brugmans continuously refresh their inventory with unique finds. “It’s been great to connect with the community and hear that they’re enjoying having a new option to furnish their homes,” Deborah remarked. She noted that many of Bonar’s previous customers have found a similar aesthetic at their new location.
Deborah’s passion for each piece is evident in her selection process. “We’re choosing from our heart when we pick pieces,” she said. “And it’s amazing to see them go to other people with the same love for antiques in their heart.” This personal connection to the items creates a unique shopping experience, appealing to those who appreciate the charm of vintage decor.
As the Brugmans look to the future, they remain committed to their vision of sustainability and community engagement. With plans for growth on the horizon, Helena’s Used Furniture Store is poised to become a beloved destination for those seeking to infuse their homes with character and history.
