Habitat for Humanity Launches New Neighborhood at YMCA Campus
The North Roebuck YMCA has officially opened its doors to a new neighborhood, welcoming its first three families into Habitat for Humanity homes just in time for Christmas 2025. This initiative marks the beginning of a larger project aimed at providing affordable housing in the area.
The inaugural families to receive their keys are the Taylor Family, the Byner Family, and the Jordan Family. These homes, constructed by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Birmingham, are the first of a planned 22 units that will be built behind the renovated YMCA campus. This project reflects a significant step towards addressing housing shortages in the region.
Arielle Taylor expressed her excitement about moving into her new home, saying, “It went very well. I was able to get my tree up and get everything moved in.” For the Byner Family, this new home represents a long-awaited change. “We had been looking for a house of our own,” said the family’s matriarch. “She said, ‘Mommy, you’re the best mommy.’”
The joy of moving into a new home is further highlighted by the personal stories of the residents. Taylor’s boyfriend, Selton Phillips, who suffers from paralysis, will also benefit from this new start. James Jackson, Phillips’ father, praised the initiative, stating, “This is a great thing they’re doing.”
Dan Pile, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Birmingham, emphasized the importance of community partnerships in this initiative. The project aims to tackle various health disparities and inequities related to affordable housing, early childhood education, pediatric care, mental health, and nutrition. “We recognize we can’t do all of it ourselves,” Pile remarked. “We gathered together like-minded partners to address these inequities that no one can handle themselves.”
As the New Year approaches, these families are looking forward to the opportunities that their new homes will bring. The opening of these Habitat for Humanity homes is not just a milestone for the families involved but also a significant development for the community, aiming to foster a supportive environment for all residents.
