Gregg Carr Inducted into College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025

Former College Football Hall of Fame linebacker Gregg Carr will be inducted into the prestigious institution on December 12, 2023, as part of the Class of 2025. Carr, who gained recognition as a consensus All-American while playing for Auburn University in 1984, transitioned from a successful football career to become an orthopedic surgeon.

Reflecting on his journey, Carr expressed gratitude for the opportunities football provided him. “Football, for me, was an opportunity that exposed me to a lot of things that I probably would not have had exposure to,” he stated during a press conference. He emphasized how the sport offered him an education and life lessons that have been invaluable in his medical career.

Carr’s football legacy is notable. He was a standout at Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama, where he earned first-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) honors twice. During his time at Auburn, he helped the team secure the SEC Championship in 1983. Even decades later, he remains second on Auburn’s all-time tackles list, cementing his place in team history.

His induction marks Carr as the ninth Auburn player to receive this honor. Other notable inductees from Auburn include Tucker Frederickson, Pat Sullivan, and Tracy Rocker. Carr sees his enshrinement as a platform to represent Auburn and his fellow players. “I think all of us up here would agree that we’re only here because of the efforts of a lot of really good people around us,” he remarked.

The induction ceremony will take place at the Bellagio Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, as part of the 67th annual National Football Foundation Awards Dinner. The event, which includes an 18-player and four-coach class, will be televised on ESPN+ at 8:30 p.m. CST.

Carr reminisced about his experiences in the Iron Bowl, the intense rivalry between Auburn and Alabama. He participated in four Iron Bowls, highlighting the emotional toll and unique energy surrounding the game. “I think the Iron Bowl was unlike any other game that I played in,” Carr noted, underscoring the significance of the rivalry in his life and the lives of many in Alabama.

The ceremony not only celebrates Carr’s individual achievements but also honors the collective history of Auburn football. His story illustrates the profound impact of college athletics on personal and professional development, showcasing how sports can shape lives beyond the field.
