Renee and Kelley Hayes, a couple from Texas, have transformed their lives by trading in their large home for a full-time adventure in a recreational vehicle (RV). After their children left for college, they chose to embrace a new lifestyle, purchasing an RV for approximately $82,000 in August 2018. Their journey reflects a growing trend among empty nesters seeking to explore the country while minimizing expenses.

Kelley had long dreamed of an RV lifestyle, and a job relocation expedited this vision. The couple, both now aged 58, relished their time in a spacious 2,000 square-foot home, complete with a three-car garage and a pool. Yet, they recognized the opportunities that awaited them on the road.

Exploring the U.S. has opened doors to new experiences. They have visited iconic locations such as the Grand Canyon in Arizona and participated in the famous hot air balloon festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Kelley described the thrill of camping right where the balloons launched, saying, “Every morning the balloons would fly over, right over the RV itself, and at night they would have the glow.”

After Kelley’s transfer to Georgia for work, the couple decided to sell their Texas home. They listed it for $399,000 in January 2019, successfully selling it by March. This strategic decision allowed them to avoid the uncertainties of the real estate market, as they anticipated housing prices in Georgia might decrease.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, their lifestyle evolved further. Kelley’s role at General Motors transitioned to remote work, allowing them to travel without the constraints of traditional employment. He officially retired at 55 in 2022 and has since taken on contract work, contributing to their income during their travels.

The couple has found that living on the road involves various logistical challenges, including maintaining their RV and managing costs. They utilize services like Harvest Hosts, which offers overnight stays at wineries and golf courses, alongside traditional campgrounds. This arrangement allows them to connect with friends and family along their journey.

While the benefits of RV living are numerous, it also comes with expenses. Kelley highlighted that although they save on property taxes and home maintenance costs, they still face significant expenses for fuel, medical care, internet, and recreational subscriptions. Renee noted that fuel costs can add up quickly, sometimes reaching hundreds of dollars each month.

To mitigate these costs, they have developed a routine that involves longer stops and slower travel, which not only reduces fuel consumption but also allows for deeper exploration of each location. Kelley’s handy skills have proven advantageous, enabling him to perform many repairs on their RV, which can otherwise be costly without mechanical knowledge.

Renee advises prospective RVers to downsize their belongings well in advance and consider renting an RV before making a purchase. They recommend attending RV shows to discover various models and features that suit individual travel preferences.

Despite the challenges, the couple is committed to their lifestyle. They appreciate the freedom it brings and intend to continue their travels for as long as possible. “Our priority right now is to see and do stuff rather than to accumulate stuff,” Renee said, reflecting their philosophy of embracing experiences over material possessions.

As they share their journey on social media, the Hayes’ experiences resonate with many others considering a similar path. They encourage those interested in RV living to take the leap and explore the adventure that awaits.
