Dick Beardsley Races Marks 30 Years with Celebrations in Detroit Lakes

The Dick Beardsley Races will celebrate its 30th anniversary in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, on September 6, 2024, with a weekend of festivities featuring the legendary runner himself. The event will kick off with a pre-race pasta feed at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion on September 5, where Beardsley will share stories and entertain attendees, continuing a cherished tradition.
Beardsley, who has been a central figure in this annual event since its inception, expressed his excitement about the milestone. “Every year, on the night before, we always have packets ready to pick up, and a pasta dinner,” he said. “I usually get up and tell a few stories; some years I even play my guitar and sing a little.” This year, he will be joined by fellow running legend Bill Rodgers, who is returning for his third appearance at the races, having previously participated in 2002 and 2013.
Reflecting on their friendship, Beardsley noted, “He’s a good friend of mine… We’ve stayed really close.” The event has a rich history of featuring prominent athletes, with Rodgers being both the first and last guest runner before the tradition was put on hold. Beardsley decided to bring him back for this significant anniversary, making it a special occasion for both runners and fans.
As part of the celebrations, Beardsley plans to take Rodgers on a fishing trip, a tradition from past visits. “I’ve been a fishing guide for 52 years,” he said, highlighting his love for the outdoors when not engaged in motivational speaking across the region.
Beardsley’s life story is marked by triumphs and tragedies. His journey through running, serious injuries, addiction to painkillers, recovery, and the publication of his memoir, “Staying the Course: A Runner’s Toughest Race,” speaks to resilience. A notable turning point came in 2015 when he lost his son, Andy Beardsley, to suicide. “Gosh, I can’t believe it will be 10 years ago in October,” he reflected.
In memory of Andy, the 5K race was renamed in his honor, and Beardsley has participated in it ever since. “This will be the ninth one,” he said, acknowledging the emotional weight it carries for him.
The original race, named the Dick Beardsley Half Marathon, began in 1995 as a means to promote tourism in the area following the summer season. The event started with approximately 100 participants and has grown to attract over 1,000 runners, with a goal of reaching 3,000 participants this year.
Runners of all ages and abilities can take part in various distances, including the Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, and Youth Run. The pasta feed and race registration will take place at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion on September 5, starting at 18:00. The main races will commence the following morning, with the Half Marathon beginning at 08:00, followed by the 10K at 08:15, and the Andy Beardsley 5K at 08:30. The Youth Run will conclude the morning events at 11:00. Registration fees range from $17 for the Youth Run to $100 for the Half Marathon.
Participants can expect premium race swag this year, including high-quality shirts and medals. Post-race festivities will continue with live music in Detroit Lakes City Park from 10:00 to 18:00, featuring performances from various artists, including a tribute band and local musicians.
The Dick Beardsley Races not only celebrate athletic achievement but also foster a sense of community, honoring the legacy of an enduring local hero.
