Dalton State College Recognized as a Top Workplace for Second Year

Dalton State College has been recognized as one of the best colleges in the United States to work for, according to the Great Colleges to Work For program. The results, revealed on March 15, 2024, in a special supplement of The Chronicle of Higher Education, highlight the institution’s commitment to fostering a supportive workplace environment.

The recognition comes following a survey conducted across 199 colleges and universities. Only 76 institutions received the “Great College to Work For” designation, which acknowledges specific best practices and policies that enhance employee well-being. Dalton State is categorized as a medium-sized institution, serving between 3,000 and 9,999 students.

Key Categories of Recognition

Dalton State achieved honors in eight categories, an increase from five in the previous year. The recognized categories include:

– Faculty & Staff Well-being
– Professional Development
– Confidence in Senior Leadership
– Supervisor/Department Chair Effectiveness
– Job Satisfaction & Support (new in 2025)
– Shared Governance (new in 2025)
– Faculty Experience (new in 2025)

This year, Dalton State also made it to the Great Colleges Honor Roll, a distinction awarded to the top ten four-year colleges that have been recognized multiple times within their size category. This marks the second consecutive year Dalton State has achieved Honor Roll status, having received recognition in two categories in 2020.

Cultivating a Supportive Environment

Dalton State President John Fuchko emphasized that this honor reflects the ongoing efforts to create a mission-driven workplace. “We strive for Dalton State to be a place where people feel valued and supported and to know that their work makes a difference in the lives of our students and in the communities we serve,” he stated.

The college’s commitment to a supportive culture is echoed by faculty members. Jennifer Randall, a professor of English and the 2024-2026 faculty senate president, highlighted the establishment of a Shared Governance Committee in 2024. This initiative aims to enhance collaboration among faculty, staff, and student leaders while strengthening the campus community. “Focusing on faculty, staff, and student engagement enhances campus priorities, providing opportunities for meaningful collaboration and authentic, personal connections,” she noted.

The recognition results stem from a thorough assessment process, which includes an institutional questionnaire capturing employment data and workplace policies, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional staff. Employee feedback was pivotal in determining the recognition of institutions.

The Great Colleges to Work For program is one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition initiatives in the United States.
