Community Events and Fundraisers Scheduled in Hanover and Wilkes-Barre
Residents of the Hanover and Wilkes-Barre areas have a variety of community events and fundraisers to look forward to in the coming weeks. These gatherings, ranging from meetings to dinners and cultural celebrations, offer opportunities for social engagement and community support.
Upcoming Meetings and Book Clubs
The Plains Sons of the American Legion will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. on January 21, 2026, at the American Legion Post 558 in Plains Township. Squad Commander Jim Emil will preside over the gathering, where future fundraising and veterans events will be on the agenda. All members of the Sons of the American Legion are encouraged to attend.
Also on January 21, the Osterhout Free Library will host a new teen book club named “Bookish Banter,” running from 5 to 6:30 p.m. This initiative aims to engage young readers in discussions about their current reads and recommendations, fostering a love for literature among participants.
Delicious Fundraisers and Cultural Events
On January 31, 2026, the Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church will hold a piggie/holubtsi dinner from noon to 4 p.m. at their school hall located at 635 N. River St., Wilkes-Barre. The meal includes stuffed cabbage, mashed potatoes, vegetables, bread, and dessert for $15 for adults and $9 for children aged 12 and younger. While walk-ins are welcome, reservations are encouraged by calling 570-829-3051.
Another culinary event will take place at St. Maria Goretti Church on February 1, 2026. The church will serve a pasta and sausage dinner from noon to 3 p.m., featuring salad, beverages, dessert, and bread for a donation of $15. Children aged five and under can eat free when dining in. The Holy Trinity Orthodox Church will offer a Super Bowl piggy sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from February 2 to February 5, with pick-up available on February 7. Educational and Cultural Opportunities
On February 9, 2026, King’s College will present a program titled “The Organ and Catholic Liturgy” at 7 p.m. in the George and Giovita Maffei Family Commons, located at 29 W. North St., Wilkes-Barre. The parish of St. Nicholas/St. Mary will celebrate its 59th German Nite on February 14, 2026, starting at 5 p.m.. The evening will feature a traditional German meal, including pork and sauerkraut, chicken francaise, and more, followed by dancing from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.. Lastly, the Wilkes-Barre Twp. Municipal Building has announced a book sale in honor of the township’s 250th commemoration. Books can be ordered for $25 at the municipal building, with payment options including check or money order made out to Wilkes-Barre Twp.
