Cheryl Jean Husby, a beloved artist and community member, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by her family. She was 76 years old. Cheryl’s life was marked by her creative spirit and deep commitment to her family and community, leaving a lasting impact on those around her.

Born on December 30, 1948, in Minneapolis to Dorothy and George Chergosky, Cheryl graduated from U-High in 1966. She pursued her passion for the arts, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1983, a Master of Arts in 1984, and a Master of Fine Arts in 1986 from the University of Wisconsin Superior and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, respectively.

Throughout her life, Cheryl embraced a variety of interests, from harvesting wild rice and running sled dogs to baking bread over a wood stove. Her adventurous spirit led her to spend summers at Quadna Resort and to create cherished memories with her family. In her early years, she met her husband, Bob Husby, marrying him during a summer break from her studies. The couple lived above a bakery, where they thrived creatively and economically during the cold months.

Cheryl’s artistic journey flourished with the establishment of Husby Pottery, which took the couple across the United States, including annual stays in the Florida Keys. Her artistry garnered awards, including first place in clay at the Coconut Grove Art Festival. Beyond her artistic pursuits, she was passionate about gardening, skiing, and playing tennis, always finding joy in the beauty of nature.

Her vibrant personality shone through her social gatherings, which included lively parties throughout the year. From hosting New Year’s Day celebrations to organizing monthly artist potlucks, Cheryl created an inclusive environment where friends and family could come together.

Cheryl’s commitment to community service was evident through her involvement with the Duluth Art Institute and the Duluth Preservation Alliance, where she contributed her time and expertise to enhance local culture and heritage.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, Bob, their son Seth Draper and daughter Elissa Husby, along with grandsons Zane and Noah Draper. She also leaves behind her sisters, Barbara Swango and JoAnn Mancuso, her brother George Chergosky, and many loving cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Bruce Swango.

The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the medical teams at St. Luke’s, Mayo Clinic, and Benedictine, as well as all those who offered their support during Cheryl’s final days.
