Art enthusiasts can look forward to the opening of the exhibit titled “Gunita ng Kasaysayan, Kulay ng Kasalukuyan” or “Memories of the Past, Colors of the Present,” featuring renowned Filipino artists Nemesio Miranda and his son Don Nemesio Miranda III. This event will take place at the CAHA Gallery in Hagåtña, Guam, at 18:00 on October 15, 2023. The exhibit is organized by the Consulate General of the Philippines in collaboration with the Guam Council for the Arts and Humanities Agency and the Filipino Community of Guam, celebrating both Museums and Galleries Month in the Philippines and National Arts and Humanities Month in the United States.
The exhibition will showcase a wide range of artworks that reflect the rich cultural heritage and contemporary themes explored by both artists. It will run until October 22, 2023, allowing visitors ample time to engage with the displays.
Nemesio Miranda: A Legacy of Imaginative Art
Nemesio Miranda, affectionately known as Nemiranda, is a celebrated painter and sculptor whose works draw from a tapestry of folklore, daily life, and personal experiences. His unique approach to art, characterized by imaginative and emotive portrayals, earned him the title “Father of Imaginative Figurism.” Over his prolific career, Nemiranda has participated in more than 100 exhibitions both in the Philippines and internationally.
Among his most notable series is “Marawi in the Eyes of an Artist,” which has toured various locations for the past two years. His significant contributions to Philippine art include a mural that chronicles the History of the Philippine Army, located in Fort Bonifacio, as well as the iconic EDSA Shrine Mural and the Leyte Gulf Landings Mural at MacArthur Park. In recognition of his impact on the arts, he has received numerous accolades, including the Gawad Tanglaw and the Outstanding Filipinos (TOFIL) Awards 2022.
In addition to his artistic achievements, Nemiranda is the founder of the Nemiranda Arthouse Family Art Museum and the Art Camp, an immersive program for senior high school visual arts students. These initiatives have played a pivotal role in establishing Angono as the Art Capital of the Philippines.
Don Miranda III: A New Voice in Art
Following in his father’s footsteps, Don Miranda III brings a fresh perspective to the family legacy. His watercolor paintings resonate with the essence of Filipino culture, portraying scenes that celebrate resilience and community life. His vibrant depictions of everyday settings, featuring cheerful figures and colorful homes, have drawn comparisons to whimsical film sets.
Miranda emphasizes the concept of “kalooban,” exploring the inner psyche of Filipinos that fosters joy and perseverance in adversity. Beyond fine art, he has over 15 years of experience in fashion merchandising and graphic design, specializing in logo design and branding. His international experiences and attendance at various print expos have broadened his understanding of design techniques and aesthetics.
As the official photographer and graphic designer for the family’s art initiatives, Miranda plays a crucial role in creating marketing materials that enhance their artistic reach. His combination of creative talent and practical skills positions him as a vital contributor to the family’s artistic endeavors.
The “Memories of the Past, Colors of the Present” exhibit promises to be a captivating experience, showcasing the depth and diversity of Filipino art through the eyes of two generations of artists. Visitors are encouraged to explore the rich narratives embedded in each piece and celebrate the cultural legacy that continues to evolve through their works.
