Carol and John Fountain Make Landmark Donation to University Hospitals
University Hospitals (UH) has announced a significant donation from Carol and John Fountain, aimed at furthering its community-focused mission. This contribution supports the Because of You campaign, which is designed to enhance healthcare services in the region. In recognition of their generosity, the South Pavilion at UH Ahuja Medical Center will be renamed the Carol and John Fountain Pavilion.
“We believe deeply in University Hospitals and in the vital need for quality, community-based care,” stated Carol Fountain. “It’s an incredible honor to be able to make this gift and help preserve the UH mission for generations to come.” The Pavilion is part of a broader initiative that includes the completion of a $236 million expansion project, which was finalized in 2023.
Expansion and Impact of the Gift
The Phase 2 expansion at UH Ahuja Medical Center added over 216,000 square feet of advanced clinical and patient care space. This includes the UH Drusinsky Sports Medicine Institute, the UH Cutler Center for Men, the Potash Women & Newborn Center, along with expanded emergency, imaging, and breast health services. The expansion is part of a long-term investment in the health and wellbeing of Northeast Ohio.
“UH Ahuja Medical Center represents what’s possible when a community invests in its own future,” remarked John Fountain. He emphasized the impact of healthcare on individuals and families, noting, “Our hope is that this gift not only supports exceptional care today but also inspires others to imagine how their own giving can make a lasting difference.”
The Fountains’ contribution exemplifies the ongoing evolution of UH Ahuja, demonstrating how philanthropy plays a crucial role in healthcare advancements. Cliff A. Megerian, MD, CEO of University Hospitals, commented, “Their gift embodies a rare kind of foresight: an understanding that philanthropy doesn’t just build buildings; it builds possibilities.”
Recognition and Future Goals
As devoted supporters of University Hospitals, the Fountains will be named Honorary Trustees to the UH Board of Directors and recognized as UH Visionaries, as well as distinguished members of the Samuel Mather Society. Their gift contributes to the ongoing fundraising efforts of the Because of You campaign, which has now surpassed $1.7 billion towards its $2 billion goal.
“Philanthropy is an essential part of how we bring world-class facilities and compassionate care to our patients,” said Dee Haslam, Co-Chair of the Because of You campaign. “The Fountain Pavilion will stand as a lasting symbol of Carol and John’s faith in the UH mission.” There are still opportunities for others to contribute and make an impact on the future of healthcare at UH Ahuja Medical Center.

The Because of You campaign is the most ambitious fundraising initiative in UH’s 158-year history, aiming to make a profound impact in five key areas: caring for children, transforming cancer care, leading discovery and innovation, serving the community, and embracing emerging priorities.
