Beloved Community Figure Dorthy Hilda Shannon Passes at 92
FARMINGTON, Missouri – Dorthy Hilda Shannon, affectionately known as Dotty, passed away on September 14, 2025, at the age of 92. Her death occurred at Presbyterian Manor in Farmington, where she spent her final years surrounded by care and support.
Born on November 19, 1932, in Sprott, Missouri, to Isaac and Hilda Shannon, Dotty spent her formative years in her hometown. Although she lived in St. Louis County for a period, she ultimately returned to Farmington, where she built her life and legacy.
A Life Dedicated to Service
After graduating from Farmington High School, Dotty began her career as a flight attendant for Ozark Airlines in St. Louis, which later merged with Trans World Airlines (TWA). Alongside her sister, Della, she served countless domestic travelers, showcasing her innate talent for hospitality.
Dotty’s commitment to serving others extended beyond her days in the air. She pursued further education and earned an associate’s degree in nursing, becoming a licensed Registered Nurse. Her compassion and expertise allowed her to provide care to family, friends, and community members facing health challenges throughout her life.
Travel was a passion for Dotty, and she explored various countries across the globe. True to her generous spirit, she often returned with souvenirs for her loved ones, reflecting her thoughtfulness and connection to family.
A Cherished Community Member
Dotty was well-known for her cheerful personality and genuine interest in the lives of those around her. Her home in Farmington served as a gathering place for family reunions and celebrations, reinforcing her role as a beloved matriarch.
A dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Desloge, Dotty found joy in participating in Bible teaching and preaching. She held dear the classic hymns she learned as a child at Little Vine Baptist Church and School, which remained an important part of her spiritual life.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Isaac and Hilda Shannon, her brother Eugene Shannon, her sister Della Ebe, and her brother Paul Shannon. Dotty is survived by her sister, Doris Mitchell, and numerous nieces and nephews who cherished her deeply.
Visitation will take place at Cozean Memorial Chapel in Farmington on September 26, 2025, beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Reverend Davy Skaggs. Interment will follow at Little Vine Cemetery in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.
In memory of Dotty, friends and loved ones are encouraged to make memorial gifts to a charity or ministry of their choice, honoring the spirit of generosity she embodied throughout her life.
