Beloved Community Figure Alice Jean Beatty Passes at 99
Alice Jean Beatty, a cherished member of the Newton community, passed away on November 28, 2025, at the age of 99. She died peacefully at Park Centre in Newton, leaving behind a legacy of love and service. A gathering for friends and family is scheduled for Monday, December 8, 2025, from 12:00 to 13:00 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. Following this, a graveside service will take place at Newton Union Cemetery.
After the graveside service, attendees are invited to a luncheon at the United Presbyterian Church to celebrate Alice’s life and contributions to the community. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Jasper County Museum or the Jasper County Courthouse Lighting Fund at the funeral home.
Alice was born on May 29, 1926, in Colfax, Iowa, to R. Spencer and Frances (Lind) Trevethan. Her family relocated to Newton during her childhood, where she excelled academically, graduating as the valedictorian of the Newton High School Class of 1944.
On January 5, 1947, Alice married Glen M. Beatty in Newton. She briefly worked in an attorney’s office before becoming the secretary to the president of the Maytag Dairy Farm, a role that showcased her organizational skills and dedication. Later, she contributed her talents part-time at Rock Communications.
Alice was an active member of both the Metz Church and the United Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School for several years. Her community involvement extended to being a part of the Sugar Grove Grange, the Farm Bureau Ladies, and the Sully Co-Op. Alice and Glen also enjoyed the companionship of their friends in a neighborhood group known as “The Gang.”
Gardening and canning were among Alice’s passions, along with attending Bible study, which reflected her commitment to her faith and family. She is survived by her children, Steve Beatty and Susan (Sherman) Swank, both of Newton, along with her grandchildren: Chris (Gerry, Jr.) Lourens, Michael Beatty, Kelly (Chad) Dooley, Peter Swank, Spencer Swank, and Jonathan Swank. Alice also leaves behind five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as her niece, Lisa Cook, of Virginia, and nephews, Gary Newman and Craig Newman, both of California.
Alice Beatty’s life was marked by her strong sense of community and family. She will be remembered for her kindness, dedication, and the lasting impact she made on those around her. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, but her spirit will continue to inspire future generations.
