Artist Matthew Yerby Unveils Vibrant Mural in DeRidder

A new mural has brightened the streets of downtown DeRidder, thanks to the creative efforts of artist Matthew Yerby. The Natchitoches native completed the vibrant artwork in just three days, starting the project on August 29, 2025. This initiative is part of the city’s beautification efforts and reflects a collaborative vision between local officials and the artist.
Yerby expressed his gratitude for the warm support he received from the community throughout the project. “The town was one of the most hospitable environments I’ve ever painted in,” he stated, highlighting the kindness of the residents he encountered during his stay.
The mural came to fruition after Shannon Gray, the city’s purchasing agent, approached Yerby following his successful projects in Toledo Bend and Natchitoches. After discussions with Mayor Michael Harris and city administrators, they settled on a design that encapsulated the mayor’s vision for DeRidder. “It was very much a group project between the administration as a whole,” said Holly Buxton, City Finance Director.
Yerby noted that the logistics of projecting the mural design were unique. The local fire chief played a critical role by bringing a fire truck to drape a blanket over street lights, ensuring optimal conditions for the projection. “It was super cool, like the whole town really helped me get this mural projected,” he remarked.
Initially, Yerby was hesitant about the project due to the need to paint over an older mural that had been a part of DeRidder for years. Ultimately, he agreed to take on the challenge, emphasizing the importance of making a fresh start. “What I want people to take from it is the big and bold letters that really show the pride of DeRidder,” he explained, noting the mural’s patriotic themes.
Yerby is passionate about celebrating Louisiana’s rich cultural heritage through his art. He hopes to inspire others to embrace their artistic potential, regardless of where they live. “It’s really important to me that art continues on because it is one of the earliest forms of any kind of human creation,” he said. He believes that fostering creativity in a time of technological advancement is crucial for the future.
In addition to his work as an artist, Yerby is also a writer and director based in Los Angeles. After graduating from Winnfield High School and Northwestern State University, he began his artistic journey while waiting for job interviews. His first significant role was with Painting with a Twist in Shreveport, followed by a move to New Orleans to pursue acting. His first feature film, titled “The Dirty South,” was released in November 2023.
Currently, Yerby is taking a break from Los Angeles to travel across the United States. He is engaging his social media followers in a unique project titled “Paintin’ USA,” where they can vote for the most beautiful locations in each state for him to paint live murals. So far, he has completed projects in ten states and plans to continue until he paints in all fifty states.
“This is something I’ve always wanted to do and honestly it’s something that’s never been done before,” he said, expressing his commitment to the project. Following its completion, Yerby intends to return to Los Angeles to continue his artistic endeavors.
