Yoakum Community Hospital Achieves Accreditation from CIHQ
Yoakum Community Hospital has successfully attained Hospital Accreditation from the Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality (CIHQ). This accomplishment was confirmed after a thorough survey that evaluated the hospital’s adherence to CIHQ standards and the Conditions of Participation set forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The accreditation underscores the hospital’s ongoing dedication to ensuring safety and delivering quality patient care.
The CIHQ assessment took place during an unannounced onsite visit from November 18 to 20, 2023. A team from CIHQ conducted a comprehensive evaluation that included a tour of the facility, a review of medical records, and observations of care practices. Additionally, the team engaged in discussions with both staff and patients to gain insights into the hospital’s operations.
Richard Curtis, Chief Executive Officer of CIHQ, stated, “CIHQ’s goal is to partner with hospitals to improve the care provided in our communities. CIHQ is proud to recognize Yoakum Community Hospital for achieving accreditation.”
In response, Tiffany Hintze, Chief Executive Officer of YCH, expressed her pride in achieving this significant milestone. She highlighted the unique aspects of the accreditation process, noting, “What made this process different was CIHQ’s collaborative, education-focused approach. The survey was not just about compliance—it was about strengthening our systems, validating our culture of safety, and helping us continuously improve how we care for our patients and serve our community.”
Significance of Accreditation
The Texas Hospital Association (THA) reports that there are 91 Critical Access Hospitals across Texas. Among these, only 16 have achieved accreditation through CIHQ, emphasizing the significance of YCH’s accomplishment. The successful survey resulted from extensive preparation over several months, showcasing the hospital’s commitment to high standards.
Susan Kutzer, Quality Management Director at YCH, detailed the efforts that led to this success. “This achievement reflects our consistent effort in updating policies, conducting internal audits and mock surveys, and strengthening documentation and care processes,” she noted. The hospital also prioritized reviewing emergency preparedness, life safety, infection prevention, and patient safety standards, while fostering collaboration across departments to share best practices.
The accreditation not only affirms the hospital’s quality of care but also enhances its reputation within the community. Hintze added, “This success is the byproduct of our team’s hard work, open communication, and shared commitment to our patients and community.”
Achieving CIHQ accreditation positions Yoakum Community Hospital as a leader in healthcare quality within the region, and it serves as a model for other institutions aiming to enhance their standards and patient care practices.
