Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Family Reports Improvement in His Health
The family of civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson announced significant improvements in his health on Sunday, confirming that he is stable and breathing independently. Jackson, who has been hospitalized in Chicago since last week, remains under medical observation but is reportedly making progress in his recovery.
In a statement, Jackson’s oldest daughter, Satita Jackson, indicated that her father is now able to communicate verbally and is eager to return home. “As he communicates, sometimes by speech and sometimes by squeezing the hands, he really wants us to continue with the work, and he’s ready to go home so that he can be out with the people,” she shared on Monday.
Jackson has been managing a diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a neurological disorder he was diagnosed with in April 2023. This condition has similarities to Parkinson’s disease, with Jackson having previously announced a Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2017. Friends and family members have been visiting from across the country to support him during this challenging time.
Reports from CBS News Chicago indicate that Jackson has been receiving medication to maintain stable blood pressure levels, with his medical team working on gradually reducing his dependence on this medication. Importantly, Satita Jackson clarified that her father has never required life support during his stay in the hospital. “He has fought valiantly against a really, really aggressive infection and has turned the corner several days ago. He’s made massive improvements every day,” she noted, emphasizing Jackson’s desire for a soft drink during his recovery.
Prominent civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton also visited Jackson and confirmed that he has not been on life support. While Satita expressed optimism about her father’s condition, she acknowledged that the timeline for his release from the hospital remains uncertain.
Rev. Jesse Jackson, who gained national prominence for his presidential campaigns in the 1980s, is the founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. His legacy in civil rights continues to inspire many, and his family remains hopeful for his continued recovery.
