Researchers Examine Gluteus Maximus Shape’s Role in Metabolic Health

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Westminster has unveiled significant insights into how the shape of the gluteus maximus muscle may serve as an indicator of metabolic health. The research, which analyzed over 61,000 MRI scans from a large UK health database, suggests that variations in muscle shape can reflect age, gender, lifestyle, and frailty, potentially revealing underlying metabolic differences.

The findings were presented in December 2023 at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago. This study diverges from previous research that primarily focused on muscle size or fat. Instead, the use of advanced 3D imaging techniques allowed researchers to pinpoint specific areas where changes in the muscle occur.

According to lead study author E. Louise Thomas, Ph.D., a professor of metabolic imaging at the university’s School of Life Sciences, the gluteus maximus plays a crucial role in overall metabolic health. The research emphasizes that the shape of this muscle, rather than its size, may better indicate metabolic conditions.

The researchers linked participants’ physical measurements, demographics, disease biomarkers, medical histories, and lifestyle habits to changes in muscle shape over time. The data revealed that individuals with higher fitness levels—measured by vigorous physical activity and hand grip strength—exhibited a greater gluteus maximus shape. Conversely, factors such as aging, frailty, and prolonged periods of sitting were associated with muscle thinning.

Marjola Thanaj, Ph.D., a senior research fellow at the university’s Research Centre for Optimal Health, noted that these changes in muscle shape could signify early functional decline and metabolic compromise. For example, men diagnosed with type 2 diabetes showed signs of muscle shrinkage, whereas women displayed enlarged muscles, likely due to fat infiltration.

Additionally, the study found that frailty had varying effects on the gluteus maximus between genders. Men identified as frail experienced more general shrinkage throughout the muscle, while the impact on women was limited.

According to fitness expert Tanya Becker, co-founder of Physique 57 in New York City, strengthening the glutes is an important investment in long-term health. Becker emphasizes that, while full-body strength training is essential, particular attention should be given to the glutes, which are the body’s largest muscle group. These muscles act as shock absorbers, protecting the lower back, knees, and hips from undue stress.

Becker highlights that larger muscle groups burn more calories and help regulate blood sugar levels. She refers to muscles as the “organ of longevity,” underlining their importance in maintaining overall health. Strengthening the glutes can also improve posture and balance, thereby reducing the risk of falls and enhancing mobility.

To promote glute strength, Becker recommends traditional weighted exercises such as squats, lunges, and bridges. However, she acknowledges that these may not be suitable for everyone, particularly older adults with injuries or joint pain. For those individuals, she suggests Pilates and barre classes, which offer bodyweight exercises that can be adapted for various fitness levels.

The implications of this research extend beyond mere aesthetics. The shape of the gluteus maximus may provide a window into an individual’s metabolic health, potentially guiding early interventions for conditions like type 2 diabetes. As the understanding of muscle morphology continues to evolve, further studies may refine strategies for enhancing health through targeted exercise and lifestyle modifications.
