Prepare for Winter Storms: Mental Health Tips from Experts
As a severe winter storm approaches various regions, including parts of the United States, anxiety levels among residents are on the rise. Outpatient psychiatrist Dr. Frank Clark emphasizes the importance of managing this anxiety effectively, urging individuals to focus on preparation and emotional awareness.
Effective Preparation Strategies
Dr. Clark highlights that being prepared can significantly alleviate anxiety. “Being prepared allows us to control what we can control and also relinquish what we can’t control,” he stated. Essential preparations include stocking up on non-perishable food items and ensuring that generators are ready for use. He expressed gratitude for meteorologists who provide timely weather updates, enabling people to plan accordingly.
Acknowledging feelings of anxiety is equally crucial. “We don’t want to judge our feelings. We want to identify them, acknowledge them, and then think about what we are attributing our fear to,” Dr. Clark explained. He noted that experiencing trauma can lead to hyper-vigilance and overreaction. Grounding techniques and self-centering are vital to manage these heightened emotions.
Maintaining Connections and Seeking Help
Dr. Clark advises individuals to take breaks from constant news updates. “If we’re constantly staring at our weather app, that’s just going to drive up our anxiety. We have to know when it’s time to put the phone down and turn off the media for a moment,” he said. This approach allows for a more balanced perspective during stressful situations.
Staying connected with friends and loved ones is another essential step. “We don’t want to isolate ourselves when we have anxiety, especially about the weather. Talking to people we love provides psychological safety, which is important in every area of our life,” Dr. Clark noted.
In cases of overwhelming anxiety or distress, Dr. Clark encourages individuals to seek professional help. He pointed out that the 988 Suicide Hotline serves as a valuable resource for those experiencing significant distress. “I would just look at it as the mental health hotline for people who are feeling hopeless and just need a listening ear,” he advised.
As the winter storm approaches, taking these proactive steps can help individuals manage their mental health effectively. By preparing adequately and maintaining connections, residents can navigate the challenges posed by severe weather with greater resilience.
