New Study Unveils Chewing Gum’s Effects on Brain Activity
Recent research highlights the impact of chewing gum on brain activity, suggesting a link to its calming and focusing effects. While scientists have long acknowledged the cultural significance of this habit, the biological mechanisms behind its benefits are only now being explored.
Humans have chewed gum for thousands of years, a practice that dates back at least 8,000 years to Scandinavia, where ancient peoples used birchbark pitch as an adhesive. Over time, various cultures, including the Greeks and the Maya, adopted the practice, often utilizing tree resins for both enjoyment and perceived health benefits. This widespread tradition reflects not only its practical uses but also its role in social customs and personal well-being.
The transformation of chewing gum from a niche activity to a mass-market product is largely credited to William Wrigley Jr., whose innovative marketing strategies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries changed public perception. Through extensive advertising campaigns, Wrigley positioned his brands, such as Juicy Fruit and Spearmint, as solutions to everyday challenges. A notable 1916 article encapsulated this narrative, suggesting, “Are you worried? Chew gum,” linking the act of chewing to stress relief.
As the commercialization of chewing gum peaked in the mid-20th century, scientific inquiry into its effects emerged more recently. A 2025 review conducted by researchers at the University of Szczecin in Poland analyzed over three decades of brain-imaging studies, employing techniques such as MRI and EEG. The findings revealed that chewing gum activates brain regions associated with movement, attention, and stress regulation, offering insights into its calming effects during tasks like public speaking or solving complex problems.
The study indicated that chewing gum enhances activity in motor and sensory networks, as well as higher-order regions linked to alertness and emotional control. This activation leads to brief shifts in brain-wave patterns, associated with a state of “relaxed concentration.” Despite these promising results, the study also noted limitations, such as inconsistent anxiety reduction in high-stress scenarios.
While the evidence suggests that chewing gum may positively influence mood and focus, experts caution that the effects may be short-lived. Some researchers propose that the act of chewing might merely satisfy the urge to fidget rather than provide lasting benefits.
Additionally, dental professionals have raised concerns about potential negative effects of chewing gum. While sugar-free options may help prevent cavities, excessive chewing or the presence of certain sweeteners can lead to dental issues. Future research should examine the long-term effects of chewing gum, isolating variables such as flavor and stress, and explore its therapeutic potential.
As investigations into the effects of chewing gum continue, a comprehensive understanding of its impact on brain function will further illuminate the implications of this longstanding habit. The findings not only shed light on the cultural significance of chewing gum but also emphasize the importance of ongoing research in uncovering its benefits and potential risks.
