Local Surgeon Hosts Free Workshop on Breast Cancer Awareness
In a significant initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, local surgeon Alicia Silva, MD, FACS, will lead a free virtual workshop focused on breast cancer prevention. The event, organized by Thriving Pink, is scheduled for October 27, 2023, from 19:00 to 20:00 (UTC) and aims to educate attendees on vital aspects of breast cancer awareness and community action.
The workshop, titled “Beyond the Pink Ribbon: Breast Cancer Facts, Prevention & Community Action,” will provide the latest statistics on breast cancer, practical prevention strategies, and ways for community members to support breast cancer survivors. Dr. Silva, a board-certified general surgeon specializing in breast surgery at Sutter Health in Davis, is also a board director with Thriving Pink. She brings a wealth of experience, having previously conducted educational talks on breast cancer for the Ventanilla de Salud at the Mexican Consulate in Sacramento.
Leslie Hunter, the executive director of Thriving Pink, emphasized the workshop’s importance, stating, “Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than wearing pink—it’s about empowering our community with knowledge and tools to make a real impact.” She highlighted Dr. Silva’s dual role as a surgeon and a leader within the organization, noting that this unique perspective equips her to convey critical information about breast cancer and actionable community involvement.
Participants in the workshop can expect to gain evidence-based insights into reducing breast cancer risk and learn specific steps they can take to support the breast cancer community in Yolo County. The event aims to leave attendees with practical measures to enhance their understanding and involvement in breast cancer prevention and support initiatives.
This free virtual event is open to the public and is part of Thriving Pink’s PINKtober series, which recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout October, various events and activities will take place to raise awareness, provide education, and foster community support for individuals affected by breast cancer.
