Jason Tartick Opens Up About Struggles During Dry January
Jason Tartick, former star of “The Bachelorette,” has candidly shared his experiences during Dry January, highlighting the challenges he faces in social situations while abstaining from alcohol. In a recent episode of his podcast “Trading Secrets,” aired on January 12, 2026, Tartick expressed that he has been “struggling” with the social aspect of not drinking.
Social Challenges During Dry January
At 37, Tartick noted that the social side of his journey has been particularly difficult. He explained, “I’m saying no to a lot of social things because I’m like, ‘They’re there, they’re drinking.’ I’ll just stay at home.” This shift in his social life became evident when he attended a bar to watch a Buffalo Bills football game, marking his first outing in 12 days. While there, he faced temptation when offered a beer but opted for water instead. “I never been so tempted to do anything in my life, but I passed,” he stated.
Despite feeling less inclined to attend gatherings where alcohol is present, Tartick reflected on the enjoyment he finds in socializing, even when he is not drinking. He admitted, “I feel like I’m less willing to say ‘yes’ to social things knowing I’m not drinking. But once I’m there, I’m having a great time. I don’t need alcohol.” This highlights a common struggle for many individuals trying to navigate social norms while pursuing healthier habits.
Health Benefits and Personal Growth
While Tartick faces challenges, he also recognizes significant benefits from his month-long commitment to sobriety. “I feel better. I look better. I’m sleeping better. I have more energy,” he explained, emphasizing the positive changes in his productivity and mental clarity. Many people participate in Dry January as a way to reset their relationship with alcohol after the holiday season, focusing on both physical and mental health.
Tartick’s journey comes on the heels of a busy holiday period, during which he publicly celebrated his relationship with his girlfriend, Kathryn Hurley. The couple has been together since adopting a dog from her nonprofit organization, Wags & Walks Nashville, which she founded in 2019. Tartick expressed his affection for Hurley on social media, stating, “From the dogs you save every day to the people whose lives you change, you make everything around you more beautiful.” He adopted his dog, Teddy, from Hurley last year, further solidifying their bond.
Hurley shared her excitement about Tartick’s adoption of Teddy, stating, “We are thrilled to have helped Jason find his forever pup! At Wags & Walks, we believe every rescue dog has a perfect match.” This connection has not only transformed Tartick’s life but also raised awareness about the importance of giving rescue dogs a second chance.
As Tartick continues his journey through Dry January, he is learning to embrace the positives while navigating the social complexities that come with abstaining from alcohol. His reflections resonate with many who seek to improve their health and well-being, especially in a culture where social drinking is often the norm.
