Healthcare Workers Rally in Albany Against Federal Funding Cuts
Healthcare workers from across Western New York will converge on Albany on March 4, 2024, to protest significant federal funding cuts impacting hospitals, nursing homes, and essential healthcare services. This demonstration, dubbed a “Code Red” for healthcare, aims to highlight a funding crisis that could lead to the closure of eight hospitals in the Southern Tier and the potential loss of jobs for approximately 50,000 healthcare employees in New York State.
The protest, organized by the 1199 SEIU, is expected to draw thousands of participants from various regions, including Niagara Falls and Salamanca. According to Shameka Burnett-Matthews, an administrative organizer with the union, “We will have hundreds of workers heading out on buses from the Western New York area.” Workers will begin their journey early in the morning, with buses departing from 2421 Main Street in Buffalo around 05:00.
As the rally unfolds at the state Capitol, participants will engage in a march and raise their voices against the proposed cuts, which they argue threaten the integrity of healthcare in the region. Burnett-Matthews emphasized the urgency of their message, stating, “We want to make our voices heard, make our demands heard and stop the cuts to healthcare.”
The Albany event will serve not only as a demonstration but also as a platform for workers to lobby elected officials on the critical need for healthcare funding. Organizers have indicated plans to unveil a comprehensive approach to address the crisis, reinforcing the importance of healthcare services for communities throughout New York.
With the potential ramifications of these cuts looming, healthcare workers are determined to advocate for the resources necessary to sustain their operations and protect their jobs. The outcome of this protest could have lasting implications for healthcare accessibility in the state and the livelihood of thousands of workers.
