SITE Santa Fe’s New Exhibition Explores Time and Reflection

A new exhibition titled Once Within a Time opened at SITE Santa Fe, inviting visitors to explore the complex themes of time and reflection through the works of 71 diverse artists and writers. Curated by Cecilia Alemani, the exhibition incorporates a variety of perspectives, echoing the narrative style of science fiction writer Ted Chiang, whose 1998 story “Story of Your Life” serves as a thematic reference point. The exhibition will run through January 12, 2026.

One of the central ideas of Once Within a Time is the concept of reflection, both literal and metaphorical. Visitors encounter curated themes such as “The Wheel of Telling” and “The Secret Life of Puppets,” which present mirror images, doubles, and echoes of cultural narratives. This reflective approach allows attendees to experience multiple perspectives and timelines simultaneously, rather than in a linear sequence. The exhibition’s title itself features the word “Time” printed upside down, hinting at alternative ways of experiencing both art and language.

Among the standout works is Nora Turato’s mural “I WANT OUT!” (2025), a striking red vinyl triptych displayed prominently on the museum’s exterior. Inside, Will Rawls responds with his series of glitchy screen prints titled Amphigory (2022), which features the barely legible phrase “U Can’t Escape Alive.” This interplay of contrasting messages creates an engaging dialogue between the pieces.

The exhibition also highlights the contributions of Rebecca Salsbury James, whose reverse paintings on glass evoke a sense of nostalgia and connection to early 20th-century artistic circles in Taos, New Mexico. James’s diverse collection of miniatures, many displayed in pairs, further emphasizes the theme that “one tells a story, but two hold a conversation.”

In another part of the gallery, Louise Bonnet’s figures prompt reflections on the human form, while Katja Seib’s large-scale portraits explore the concept of reflection in both physical and metaphysical contexts. One of Seib’s pieces, “Cornucopia” (2025), creates an infinity mirror effect that draws viewers into a deeper contemplation of self and other.

The exhibition also tackles darker themes, such as the impact of the atomic bomb on communities in New Mexico. David Horvitz’s installation “flock of wingless birds” (2025) features 4,555 handmade glass marbles, each representing individuals of Japanese descent held in internment camps in Santa Fe. This poignant installation serves as a powerful reminder of the historical injustices faced by these communities.

Additionally, Maja Ruznic presents a thought-provoking series of commissioned paintings that engage with themes of cultural assimilation and memory. Installed over traditional murals in the New Mexico Museum of Art, Ruznic’s work evokes layered narratives that challenge viewers to reconsider their understanding of history.

Despite the exhibition’s ambitious scope, some critiques have emerged regarding its approach to local issues, particularly around water scarcity in New Mexico. Certain thematic areas, such as “Land of Little Rain,” have been noted for their lack of clarity in addressing the region’s complex relationship with water and environmental challenges.
